The six near afflictions, subtle increasing clear and boundless afflictions. First, in the "Union of Sun and Moon," it says that there are six afflictions: Ignorance, which refers to clinging to the aspect of the fundamental deluded thought; delusion, which arises from the aspect of wisdom; hatred, which arises from the aspect of the generation stage; pride, which arises from the aspect of view; desire, which arises from the aspect of appearance; and jealousy, which arises from the aspect of non-understanding. That is, in order, the ignorance of the aspect of deluded thoughts of object and subject, and the lack of understanding that deviates slightly from wisdom and awareness, and the aspect of having hatred towards the object, and the arrogance of thinking "I," and the attachment to the object, and the anger towards others due to not understanding the meaning, etc. Second, the sixteen near afflictions. In "Self-Appearance," it says, what are the sixteen? Ignorance, mind, intellect, clinging, thought, not understanding, not seeing, not comprehending, not knowing, one's own unreality, clinging to "I," being stingy towards others, desire, attachment, pride, and anger, these are the sixteen. These are also in order: being completely defiled by the ignorance of not understanding suchness, holding the mind to the object, the intellect clinging to the subject, clinging to both as self, universal thought, not understanding the meaning, not seeing the reality to be sought, not understanding the meaning of words, not understanding the general characteristics, recognizing it as a delusion, the aspect of the previous meaning of the vow being wrong, clinging to the object as "I," disliking the perfection of others, accepting the object, being particularly attached to the object, being slightly conceited and arrogant, and being angry at the object, etc. Third, there are three types of subtle, increasing, clear, and boundless afflictions: twenty-five, fifty-one, and eighty-four thousand. First, because the fundamental ignorance is pervasive, it is not counted separately, but the pervasive five poisons are divided into five each, so there are twenty-five. In "Self-Appearance," it says that there are five types of delusion: extremely obscured delusion, unknowing delusion, unseeing delusion, very dull delusion, and extremely intoxicated delusion. There are also five types of desire: desire for hatred.

The earth, and, extremely longing desire, and, desire that disregards life, and, desire accompanied by hatred, and, desire that travels in the sky, these are the five. Hatred also has five types: hatred dominated by desire, and, hatred accompanied by anger, and, extremely coarse hatred, and, hatred accompanied by ignorance, and, hatred like seasonal thunder and rain, these are the five. Pride also has five types: pride that overwhelms with power like a lion, and, unsurpassed pride like the sky, and, brave and strong pride like a tiger, and, self-righteous pride like a vulture, and, pride that equates the unequal like an elephant, these are the five. Jealousy also has five types: subtle jealousy, and, jealousy arising from self, and, extremely harsh jealousy, and, coarse jealousy, and, jealousy in view, these are the five. These are the twenty-five afflictions. Secondly, the fifty-one are, thus, the twenty-five, twenty-five afflictions as objects, twenty-five afflictions as subjects, totaling fifty, and one root ignorance, thus fifty-one arise. Thirdly, the eighty-four thousand are: twenty-one thousand arising from desire, twenty-one thousand arising from hatred, twenty-one thousand arising from ignorance, twenty-one thousand arising from equal division, totaling eighty-four thousand. The eighty-four thousand afflictions, if divided with endless clarity, are immeasurable and inconceivable. That is also said in "Self-Manifestation": "From that, arose the inconceivable, the unspeakable, the uncountable." Those are also generated by mind, intellect, memory, habitual tendencies, and doubt, and arise from all aspects, and are tainted by the stench of afflictions, thus becoming those who experience affliction in samsara. As said in "Union of Sun and Moon": "Those and other afflictions are the mind that follows thoughts, the intellect that follows memories, the connecting habitual tendencies, and the conceptualization that is the basis of all doubts, and the aspects that grasp objects and things, etc., are immeasurable." Thus, all actions and afflictions depend on the minds and mental factors of the three realms, and that is also the collection of consciousness.
