Regarding the hells: Below Mount Kailash, measuring twenty thousand yojanas further down, are the eight hot hells, such as the Reviving Hell, and the eight cold hells, such as the Blistering Hell, all in its vicinity. The ephemeral ones exist without fixed locations in various forms of earth, water, fire, and wind. The neighboring ones are located around the two sets of eight great hells. The fundamental location of the pretas (hungry ghosts) is five hundred yojanas below Rajgir, but their branches also exist in the worlds of gods and humans. Animals mainly reside in the great ocean, their number being only like the lees of beer. Scattered animals also exist in the lands of gods and humans. Asuras reside in the hollows below the water level of Mount Meru. The gods reside above the terraces of Mount Meru, higher and higher. In the seven mountains, there are countless cities of gods and pleasure groves belonging to the retinues of the Four Great Kings. In particular, the mansions of the great yakshas Golden Foot, Mighty, Entering Existence, Glorious Splendor, Mountain Raiser, Supreme Existence, and the seventh, along with the cities of their respective retinues, exist there. Therefore, they send down the eons of human disease, livestock disease, weapons, and famine in Jambudvipa, and bring about good and bad fortune. In the retinue of these seven, reside the seven paralyzing Matris (mothers), who control their respective affairs. In the eight oceans, there are the palaces of the eight Naga kings. The eight Nagas are: Nanda, Upananda, Ashvatara, Varuna, Takshaka, Dhritarashtra, Maha-kala, and Elapatra. These are responsible for showing the near causes of heavy or light rain, etc., in Jambudvipa. On the four sides of the terraces of Mount Meru, there are the palaces of the four season-lifting yakshas, who are exceedingly powerful. These are responsible for the order of the four seasons, causing summer rains, autumn grains and flowers to ripen, winter to be cool and cold, and spring to ripen with warmth. Furthermore, these beings, such as the four wind goddesses, are far superior to ordinary sentient beings, being formed from common karma, and are called beings born of the karma of existence. They arise simultaneously with the initial formation of the world and ultimately disappear simultaneously with the destruction of the world, thus their lifespan lasts for an eon.
