The work of spreading the earth is to show the differences in the actions of sentient beings. The earth's fire ripens it, which is the manifestation of the color of sentient beings' bodies. The earth's wind makes it into extremely fine dust, which perfects the senses of sentient beings. The earth's sky performs the work of opening up space, which is to make the minds of sentient beings abide. The earth's earth presses down, which is to show the actions and merit of sentient beings. These are called the benefit of the vessel to the essence. Then again, the wind of action that ripens from below, its shape and color are like a golden wheel with a thousand spokes. Possessing the power of self-moving, it rises up and stirs all the mandalas of earth and water, just as butter arises from churning milk or yogurt. The residue of dust turns into gold, and because it is heavy, it sinks to the bottom and becomes the foundation of the earth. The clear part rises upwards, and the Mount Meru in the center rises upwards by one hundred and sixty million yojanas, and it also penetrates downwards into the golden foundation by the same amount, totaling three hundred and twenty million yojanas. Some sutras say that it penetrates downwards by fourteen thousand yojanas. The east side of that Mount Meru is made of silver, the south side is made of vaidurya, the west side is made of padmaraga, and the north side is made of gold, so the colors of the sky in the four directions also correspond to them. Half of the height that Mount Meru rises from the golden foundation, which is eighty thousand yojanas, is submerged by water, and below the upper half, there are four tiers of steps stacked on top of each other. The lowest one is the wind tier, called the jade vajra, which is filled with jade vajras. Its width is eighty thousand yojanas, level with the water, and it protrudes sixteen thousand yojanas outwards from Mount Meru. In the water, it is ○Фthree times the size, everything is the same, and from one to the next upwards, there are ten thousand yojanas. The second tier is: on top of that is the tier made of water, called the lotus heap, which is the nature of crystal, blazing with light, and it protrudes eight thousand yojanas outwards from Mount Meru. On top of that is the third tier, called the wheel stack, made of gold, and it protrudes four thousand yojanas outwards from Mount Meru. On top of that is the fourth tier, called the jewel blazing, made of coral, emitting a red light like the light of fire,

By observing the constellations, one can determine the boundary of whether it will rain or not. Mount Meru extends two thousand yojanas beyond (the outer mountains). Outside of these mountains, there are seven playful oceans and seven golden mountains. These seven mountains are arranged in a square formation, and from the inside out, they are: Yoke-Holder Mountain, Plow-Shaft-Holder Mountain, Sandalwood Mountain, Beautiful-to-Behold Mountain, Horse-Ear Mountain, Elephant-Nose Mountain, and Axis-Holder Mountain. The height to which they rise above the water level is: forty thousand yojanas, twenty thousand yojanas, ten thousand yojanas, five thousand yojanas, two thousand five hundred yojanas, one thousand three hundred and fifty yojanas, and six hundred and twenty-five yojanas. Their widths are each equal to the height they rise above the water. Between these mountains, there are eight encircling oceans. Because the eight great Naga kings play and frolic in them for an eon, they are called the Playful Oceans. The width of the first Playful Ocean is eighty thousand yojanas, and the second and subsequent oceans each have half the width of the previous one, with the water depth being three times the width. The outermost great iron mountain range is made of iron and has the same height as the Yoke-Holder Mountain. Some say it is the same as the Axis-Holder Mountain. The width of each of the four sides of the outer ocean is three hundred and twenty-two thousand yojanas. Among the continents, the East Videha continent is shaped like a half-moon, with the convex side facing outward, and its width is three hundred and fifty yojanas, while the other three sides are two thousand yojanas. The Videha and Sub-Videha continents are located on the right and left sides of the main continent, respectively, and their size is half of the main continent. Jambudvipa is located in a spindle (sog kha) position, with the three long sides being two thousand yojanas each, and the short side facing outward, with a width of three-quarters of a yojana. On its right is Chamara, and on its left are the other two Chamar continents, which are half the size of the main continent. The Western Godaniya continent is circular, with a circumference of seven thousand five hundred yojanas. On its right is Satha, and on its left is Uttaramantrina, and their size is also half of the main continent. The Northern Kuru continent is square, with each of the four sides being two thousand yojanas long. On its right is Kuru, and on its left are the other two Kuru continents, which are half the size of the main continent. If one were to describe in detail the abodes of sentient beings in these continents, it would be endless, but if one were to summarize it simply, they can be divided into two
