From the absence of letters, the meaning of the ocean-like settling is: Not appearance, nor causing to appear; Not emptiness, nor existing in emptiness; Not clarity, but the realm of great clarity; Not sinking, nor naturally distracted; Not shaking, not moving, not changing into shaking; Not acting, not moving, transcending all actions; Not arising from action, look to the great settling method; Not doing gathering and scattering, in the state of one settling; Not abiding, nor transcending it; In the secret wisdom like an ocean, Primordially spontaneous, settle in the unmoved space; From the great ocean that is difficult to fathom, Look to the top of the victory banner without sinking; Without the mind of emptiness, the great unconditioned body; Without action, therefore victorious over all actions; Primordially unborn, the unconditioned settling itself; Not transformed by appearance, not fabricated by intellect; If abiding in the dharmata space, then the meaning is shown; The wisdom of the dharmakaya, completely abandoning thoughts, If there is no movement, then it is the meaning of meditation; If not grasping at the directions of the object, Like stars appearing in the depths of the ocean, The unceasing clarity of non-grasping, The way of abiding in meaning is just like that. Thus it is said. Here, some who are not skilled in tantra, speaking in a way that reveals ignorance, clinging to the words of one aspect, thinking that these four settlements are the settling methods of Tögal (Direct Transcendence), this kind of thinking is a manifestation of not being connected to the Dharma and not knowing how to apply it to any practice. In the opening of the letterless lotus, combining the context of the words, it is applied to one aspect, but in general it can be applied to anything, such as in the guidance of the "Manifestation Treasure," it is taught to be applied to all aspects. Whether it is Trekchö (Cutting Through) or Tögal (Direct Transcendence), the root is the naked awareness, it is necessary to know how to extract it nakedly. If you do not understand this, it is useless to apply it to anything. Trekchö (Cutting Through) is mixed with the path of all ignorant meditators, wasting time for a lifetime on methods of controlling the mind, therefore unable to be liberated from samsara. Tögal (Direct Transcendence) then, clinging to objects and characteristics, is lost in the realm of the form realm. Therefore, here it is crucial to recognize the naked awareness. It is not enough to just recognize this, it is necessary to ascertain the foundation. For this, it is most important not to shake from its state. Therefore, as a method, many settling methods have been taught, first is the ocean-like settling.
