Because meditation is not helpful when needed, and if one does not practice, one must wander in samsara forever. As it says in the Ornament of Clear Realization: "The fault of not meditating is that the nature of samsara manifests, self and other, object and consciousness, and the view complete with words and phrases, and the objects complete with objects of focus, afflictions bind as self-grasping, the path of the Buddha is also lost, the nature of the result is also not recognized, the basis of equality of all dharmas is absent, self-awareness is bound by the three realms, and one falls due to conceptual thought." It also appears in the common vehicle, as it says in the Avatamsaka Sutra: "Like a deaf musician, others are delighted by it, but he himself cannot hear it, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Like a skillful boatman, who saves many sentient beings, but he himself dies there, not practicing the Dharma is also like that. Like those tormented by thirst, seeing and hearing the sound of water, cannot relieve the suffering of thirst, not practicing the Dharma is also like that." As it says in the Treasury of Knowledge: "For the sake of separation, practice is the main thing." and so on. Regarding the difference between meditation and practice, in general in the common vehicle, and in this, in the method of guiding inferior faculties, many stages of objects of focus are taught. In summary, all practices are included in the two: objects of focus with support and without support. Objects of focus with support are those that hold the mind without distraction to any of the external appearing objects, such as forms, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures, that is, holding the mind to images of deities, ritual implements, trees, stones, and so on. Objects of focus without support are objects of the mind, that is, holding the mind to the various objects of focus of the channels, energies, and bindus with appearance, wanting non-conceptualization, that is, letters, balls of light, chakras of the channels, the fire of tummo, etc., is holding the mind to the stages of mental activity. Without appearance is with the body in the lotus posture, etc., in a state where the mind does not conceptualize anything, abiding without distraction. This is also the object of focus of emptiness and clarity, non-conceptualization. In general, it is said that objects of focus are divided into two: with conceptualization and without conceptualization, and these are included there. In short, wanting everything in the state of focusing on one point is called practice, the essence is mind-abiding, the necessity is that

One hopes for results through stability of oneself. Those who wish to stop grasping and apprehending in actions, it is said in the Madhyamakāvatāra: "Meditation is the abiding of the mind, Cutting off the inner and outer movements, Grasping and apprehending cease." And again, in the same text: "Channels, winds, and bindus, Body postures, focuses, and emptiness, Are desired as meditation." These are grasping at the object of focus with the very desire to stop grasping and apprehending, and the mind goes to apprehend it. This is a method for entering profound Dharma, but it is not the yoga of profoundness itself. Meditation is a special characteristic of this Great Perfection, just as fire inherently has heat, or water inherently has moisture. Awareness has its own inherent meditation. Therefore, once awareness is recognized, it abides in its own inherent meditation. Even without deliberately cultivating the experience of bliss, clarity, and non-thought, it arises naturally. Similarly, in the bardo, the arising of inherent meditation is like the arising of what is inherent in awareness. Here too, it is similar. Once the mind is made the path, the effort of meditating on mind-abiding will exist, but if left alone, it will disappear, such is the nature of Dharma. Once awareness is made the path of wisdom, inherent meditation abides in a river-like stream. The qualities that arise naturally will abide inseparably at all times. In this regard, the part where the great meditator grasps the mind in non-thought, and the yogi directly recognizes awareness as naked in non-thought, are similar in non-thought. However, if the mind is placed in non-thought, bodily postures and so on will collapse, and it will not be fully exposed. The non-thought of awareness is the opposite of that, so there is a great difference. By making the mind the path, the temporary thoughts disappear through the antidote of conceptualization, which is like seeing awareness and thoughts being liberated. Both seem to disappear into non-remembrance and non-thought. However, because the root is not severed, grasping and clinging will naturally arise, and one thinks that unceasing will arise from the unborn. But here, because there is no place of arising and no producer, the root is severed. The energy and radiance of compassion do not cease, but manifest like reflections appearing in a mirror. He sees the outward appearance like rays emanating from the sun, so there is a great difference. Furthermore, the serene state of mind abiding in its own place, and the awareness abiding in its own place,
