Although the state of abiding is similar in clarity and non-thought, in terms of mind, because there is the bondage of grasping and being grasped, there is attachment to the state of abiding. In terms of awareness, because there is no obstruction and it is thorough, the difference is great. Also, in the clarity of awareness, because there is the appearance of objects and the clarity does not cease, and from the mind, thoughts and considerations appear towards external objects, these two are similar in the appearance of objects, but awareness does not follow objects. Although objects appear, awareness is thorough, so the root of conceptualization is cut off. The mind scatters outwards towards objects, the root is not cut off, so there is the difference of generating conceptualization. As it is said in the Six Spaces: The stainless self-mind and, the non-thought self-awareness, are similar, similar, truly confused. The un-obscured, deep clear appearance and, the sentient beings' stream of thought and attachment, are similar, similar, truly confused. The meditation of not searching and abiding and, the rest of the channels, winds, and mind, are similar, similar, truly confused. The unconscious awareness object appearance and, the thoughts, considerations, and six realms' delusion, are similar, similar, truly confused. In short, the meditation of focusing on an object is the bondage of grasping and being grasped, and the samadhi of awareness naturally abiding is the wheel of the nature of naturally abiding reality. Therefore, there is the difference between cultivating the mind of the higher realms, which generates the cycle of samsara, and directly uniting with liberation and nirvana, abiding in the intention of the Buddhas. As it is said in the Sudden Transcendence: That which arises from the natural state of abiding, is said to be true samadhi. And again: The un-fabricated, naturally abiding reality, how it does not change from that, is the intention of the Buddhas. Here, in the common path of meditation, this path of the Heart Essence is superior with five distinctions. By realizing naked awareness, there is no sharpness or dullness in the faculties. By directly realizing with one's own faculties in a thorough manner, there is no reliance on the wisdom of discriminating thought. By thoroughly realizing the awareness that transcends words, there is no hope in discursive thoughts and empty talk. No matter what appears, it is only a confusion of good and bad, realizing the three kayas as the path appearance, so there is no attachment to appearances. Because awareness is naked and thorough, seeing view, practice, and result as obstacles to awareness, not relying on abiding the mind and resting the calm and insight, it is superior. As it is said in the Sudden Transcendence: The Heart Essence is definitely summarized.

There is no sharpness or dullness in the faculties. Since the limits of mental discernment and words are exhausted, It is the faculties, not wisdom, that see. Since words do not see the nature of reality, Attainment is not achieved through the common vehicle. Because the three kayas are the appearance of the path, Seeing this is not the reversal of the three realms. Since all dharmas are equal in one taste, The ground, path, and fruit are not dependent on each other. Thus it is said. Ah la la, the difference between this vehicle and others is as great as heaven and earth. Even if taught, it is not understood. Even if explained, it is not comprehended. Still, they only hold onto the mere words of the Dharma. For those who place themselves on top of the previous introductions, because they lack the karmic connection with the Great Perfection of Naturalness, the Secret Essence, no matter what they do, they will not be closer to enlightenment sooner than others. It is truly wonderful to burst into laughter at frustration. Now, the method of how to practice the extraordinary path is shown: Without rejecting objects, without grasping the mind, In the naturally even state, without wavering, You reach the expanse of Samantabhadra's great intention. Thus, it is generally taught. From the absence of letters, the naturally abiding state, uncreated from the beginning, unaltered by appearances, uncreated by mind, abiding in the space of dharmata, is shown as the intention. Thus it is said. Without moving from the essence of inner awareness, clear, empty, and naked, not taking external objects, not scattering inward to thoughts, without binding awareness with the meditation of non-duality, abiding naturally in a clear and transparent state, is to insert awareness into measure with the four ways of settling and the three samadhis. The four ways of settling are: settling like a mountain, settling like an ocean, settling awareness, and staring at appearances. The three samadhis are: the great samadhi of self-abiding, the great samadhi of sudden arrival, and the great samadhi of expansive planting. Among these, the four ways of settling are taught in conjunction with the sequence of arising during practice. First, the settling like an ocean is taught: Without scattering, without gathering, naturally clear and bright, The clear ocean is unwavering and equal. The nature of reality is deeply clear, the state of natural primordial wisdom, Abiding without hope or fear of arising and ceasing. Just as when the ocean is not moved by the wind, when the sun, moon, and stars appear, the sun, moon, and stars appear but do not move from the water or become stained by it, similarly, when awareness is clear and transparent, even when the objects of appearance are not obstructed and appear, they are not defiled by grasping, so awareness is settled without wavering in the state of clarity.
