The empty form of appearance without existence, like the moon in water, arises without inherent existence from the very moment it appears. Therefore, there is no need for acceptance or rejection, hope or doubt, or investigation. As the venerable Deva said: "How it appears and because of its essence, investigation does not enter into this." So it is said. That which appears, its essence is emptiness, transcending truth and falsehood, and not fixed on various things, therefore it is emptiness. The unfixed variety is the arising of a collection of clear appearances without skill, cause, or condition, arising interdependently. The distant cause of these illusory plays is the beginningless habitual tendencies existing in the alaya, aroused by karma and afflictions. The near cause is merely a sudden collection. For example, seeing Devadatta as an enemy, the distant cause is karma and habitual tendencies, and the near cause is a sudden unpleasantness, so it appears as an enemy. Like the appearance of vessel and contents, happiness and suffering, these arise suddenly from causes and conditions, therefore they are untrue empty forms. If they were true, they would have to arise independently of causes and conditions. Therefore, appearing in various ways is emptiness. The Prasangika says: "Furthermore, the nature of phenomena is said to be self-nature. These are not definitely one. However one examines, that is how it appears. Various names are the basis of imputation. The proliferation of many words appears. The indefinite name is from various things. The meaning is also empty by mere examination. Since emptiness is not established anywhere, it appears as naturally pure." So it is said. The venerable Nagarjuna said: "Apart from dependent arising, there are no phenomena. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there are no phenomena." So it is said. Some say that by meditating on a deity, attainments arise, and by meditating on impermanence, etc., they arise, and if combined with this, it appears as a new accomplishment, is it not true in that? What is said here is that it appears to be accomplished only by suddenness, therefore it is untrue. If one does not meditate, it is not true, therefore it appears as meditation, etc. However, by the power of thought increasing, for a while, according to what is examined, it seems to change according to its causes and conditions, but the ultimate nature of reality does not change even by a hair's breadth. Like a child's play, the appearance of a moment seems to change, but in reality

unchanged. The appearance of illusion seems to change for a while, but it will not last forever, so in reality it is like not changing. When appearing as delusion and non-delusion, at this time it seems that wisdom will change for a while, but in reality, from the perspective of Dharma nature, even a hair's breadth will not change. Whatever appears, it arises from the play of emptiness. Some say that because there is seeing and hearing, emptiness is unreasonable. If that kind of emptiness is just focusing the mind on something that is nothing and invisible, then that is annihilation. We do not agree with or argue about that kind of emptiness. Arguing with outsiders is just a waste of effort. The eight similes of illusion are used to make it easier for people to understand the self-nature of emptiness. Now, we believe that the appearances of seeing and hearing, sentient beings and the world, samsara and nirvana, are all emptiness in appearance. If it does not appear, there is no object of dependence, so how can we talk about the object of dependence? If it is considered the nature of Dharma nature, then no nature is established, so it is not emptiness. As the Root Wisdom Treatise says: "Emptiness and non-emptiness, etc., are not found in peace." Because no Dharma is established, it is a false establishment. The Buddhas also said: "Neither self nor non-self exists." It has also been examined as "emptiness," and it has also been said as "non-emptiness," just like reciting. These are important agreements of the school, so they must be understood. Now, by observing the emptiness of self-nature, the original liberation is shown: One liberation, liberation in the Dharma nature void; Two are non-existent, object and mind are equally liberated; Self-born liberation, liberation in the wisdom void; Spontaneous accomplishment liberation, liberation in the purity of the base realm. All are due to non-birth, so emptiness is one liberation, and it is not beyond the self-nature of the only intelligence, so it is liberated there. The object and the mind that clings to the object appear as two, but from the appearance itself, they have not deviated from the non-dual only intelligence, so they are liberated there. The wisdom of self-born intelligence has no limitations or biases, so in ultimate wisdom, it is liberated in the only state of non-proliferation. The only bindu of spontaneous accomplishment is also liberated in the Dharmadhatu that is transparent and beyond expression. In the nature of ultimate liberation and vast void, there is no establishment or destruction of samsara and nirvana, so obscurations dissipate in the absence of objects, in whatever way.
