The mind is perfectly pure, encompassing everything. Because the essence of awareness (rigpa) is inherently without defilement, and has never experienced samsara, it is called 'Byangwa (Purified)'. The very essence is spontaneously accomplished with qualities, hence it is 'Chubpa (Enlightened)', because anything can arise. Compassion is universally present, pervading samsara and nirvana, and is luminous, and because it arises as individual self-awareness, it is called 'Sem (Mind)'. Moreover, the mind and mental events of conceptual aggregates arise impurely from the play of energy, so they are not the mind of Bodhi. Because it is the mind of samsara, its substance is contradictory. There is a difference between energy and the play that arises from energy. As it says in the 'All-Creating King': 'The meaning of purification is like this: The essence, the Bodhi mind, is naturally pure from the beginning. All that is done by the All-Creating King is completely pure in Samantabhadra. Therefore, it is said to be 'Purified'. Enlightenment is like this: The essence, the self-born wisdom, appearance and existence, and what is contained by the vessel and essence, all the Buddhas of the three times, sentient beings of the three realms and six classes, and all suchness, are universally enlightened and present in everything. Therefore, it is said to be 'Enlightenment'. The meaning of mind is like this: The essence, the self-born wisdom, enters and controls all appearances, existence, vessel and essence, and clearly cuts through. Therefore, it is said to be 'Mind'.' The conclusive summary of the reason is: In the self-nature of the play that arises from energy, through realization, one suddenly becomes a Buddha, and with non-realization, the aggregates of ignorance and delusion arise. The eight aggregates that arise from the Alaya, together with their objects, no matter how appearance, existence, vessel and essence appear as play, they have never moved from the expanse of the Bodhi mind. The expanse of mind is unmoved, and in the very state of equality, samsara and nirvana, everything is liberated into the vast expanse of intention. The Bodhi mind, like a flawless crystal jewel, is transparent, and with its naturally clear energy, the realization appears as a suddenly purified Buddha, and has not moved from the very appearance of awareness. Because of non-realization, the vessel and essence of ignorant and deluded sentient beings, together with their eight aggregates, have also not moved from the self-nature of awareness. That is to say, whatever appears to each, it is said that it has not moved from the self-nature of their own awareness, but not that everything becomes one in a common self-nature of awareness.

Like being unmoving, that is not possible, because it is impossible for the knowable. The mind with the basis of the ālaya, arises from the unilluminated ignorance. The non-conceptual clarity of the ālaya-vijñāna, the non-conceptual self-illumination of the five sense consciousnesses, the conceptual mind consciousness, grasping objects and merely abiding in non-conceptual one-pointedness, and the afflicted mind consciousness, abiding in the state of arising in any of the three poisons. These also arise as the play from the power of rigpa, that is, in the nature of rigpa, there is no impurity, merely in the clear appearance, appearing as all samsaric dharmas of affliction. Thus, the basis of rigpa from which everything arises and appears is like a jewel, a treasury, a mirror, a crystal ball, silk, a garuda, a lion, an ocean, the sky, and the earth, having the same qualities. As it is said in the Pearl Rosary: "Suchness of mind is like a jewel, fulfilling needs and desires. Like a treasury, fulfilling needs. Like a mirror, reflecting whatever is shown. Like a crystal ball, stainless and clear. Like silk, appearing in various ways. Like a great garuda, without contraction or expansion." "Like a lion, perfecting the power of seeing." "Like an ocean, deep and pervasive. Like the sky, naturally liberated. Like the earth, stable in everything. Superior to all objects." These are only examples representing one aspect, and there is nothing that is exactly the same. Those with little wisdom think that everything is the same because of the self-characteristic of sound, or they use negative examples as metaphors. For example, the aspect of a jewel having spontaneously perfect qualities is used to represent something, but one should not cling to examples of ignorant matter, etc. Here, those who do not understand the aspect should not think of such bad doubts. Therefore, a jewel represents the nature of rigpa having spontaneously perfect qualities, but one should not think of it as matter. A treasury represents the natural fulfillment of needs, but one should not think of it as a place or the self-characteristic of things, etc. A mirror represents the unobstructed basis of appearance, but one should not think of the play of already appeared images, etc. Crystal represents primordial purity and transparency, but one should not think of purity as only one aspect and having substance, etc. Silk represents the unobstructed way of appearance, but one should not think of it as being formed into colors and shapes.
