Thoroughly gathering in is: The mind that desires thus and is happy in the heart, The joy of union, relatives, sweet words, enjoyment, And the place and direction that are pleasing to the mind, When a mind arises adorned with natural joy, That itself is recognition, with a naturally abiding posture, Unfabricated, spontaneously accomplished in the primordial space. When joy arises and fades, it is the resonance of awareness, so remain without moving from the posture of recognizing the zang ka. As it is said in The Heap of Jewels: When the mind's memory appears outward, My wisdom is self-purified. If there is no subsequent cutting off of this, My sounds are all heard by this. So it is said. The sky-nail of the knowledge of letting go and gathering in one's own place, dissolving into the two-in-one nature of reality, is: In the intermediate state of nature, one trembles while going and staying. Whether joy or displeasure arises, When it arises, without recognizing or accepting or rejecting, The natural state, without differentiation, Is said to be ignorance dissolving into great clear light. Other than joy and displeasure, when awareness vanishes into an object, at the moment of the object's appearance, Without looking at the place of appearance, But recognizing the basis of appearance, the zang ka, Without abandoning the outer appearance, it dissolves on the appearance, And without abandoning the inner movement, it dissolves on the movement, simultaneously, Like untying a yoke, the two yokes on the mouth dissolve simultaneously in two directions. That part of the intermediate awareness that dissolves is called ignorance dissolving into clear light emptiness. When awareness directly grasps its own face, all its power appears as self-clear play, there is no place where it does not dissolve, Because there is no basis, and thought has not entered, it dissolves in its own place, the nature of reality is naturally present. In short, if grasped by the mind, it is bound; if released, it is liberated. Not liberated in any way is said to be beyond the extremes of bondage and liberation. As it is said in The Garland of Pearls: By the arising of uncertainty, The mind itself, which appears as certain, is liberated. All that appears as form Is liberated in the state of having no nature. The formless ones are liberated into entities. Dharma is liberated by dharma, And the nonexistent is also liberated by the nonexistent. One is liberated by one, And the two that appear as two are both liberated. So it is said. The sky-nail of dreams and sleep, appearing as ignorance and clear light, is: Even when intoxicated by sleep at night and so on, By sleeping in a state of naturalness, free from contraction and expansion, The coarse appearance subsides, so the grasping at it subsides. Subtle, extremely subtle graspi

When the sun sets with its rays, the mind of awareness, in a state of equanimity and non-thought, naturally abides, free from arising, ceasing, hope, and fear. When all conceptualizations are liberated in the Dharmadhatu, it is said to be liberation from Samsara and Nirvana. Sleep is the arising of the seed of ignorance, involuntarily gathering the mind inward. The subtle activities of dreams, such as latent tendencies, etc. Therefore, the methods for training in it are taught: seizing dreams, training, transforming, cutting off, and so on, are explained elsewhere. Here, training with one key point of the non-elaborate nature of reality is: lying down like a lion, focusing on the essence of awareness-emptiness without distraction. When sleep gathers conceptualizations of external objects, and as it becomes more and more subtle, not relaxing that uninterrupted awareness, at that time, the winds and mind enter the central channel, and that which does not conceptualize anything merges with the emptiness of awareness. The winds and mind do not scatter outward, therefore there are no dreams, and one abides in the state of single luminosity. When accustomed, one sees and hears the appearances of the surroundings, but does not conceptualize them, and the clarity of awareness and non-conceptualization become a union. The bliss of one's own place and the three appear simultaneously, as it says in the *Thal 'Gyur*: "Having definitely gathered body, speech, and mind, mix the great luminosity with sleep." This is its meaning. The noble Lama greatly values this. That is also, at first, dreams increase, and finally cease. The best is to cease from dullness, the intermediate is to cease from great clarity, and the lowest is to cease from dreaming of virtue. The best and intermediate refer to focusing the mind on the clarity of sleep, and the lowest refers to action. In that same Tantra, it says: "These dreams are many at first, the best cease from dullness, the intermediate cease from great clarity, know that to be the lowest. The lowest is unclear, and then transforms. All of those reach the standard." Thus it says. Explaining sleep as self-arisen wisdom, sleep is also the great expanse of self-arisen primordiality, all energies dissolve into the Dharmadhatu of essence, clinging to appearances, all elaborations naturally subside, it is the intent of uncreated self-arisen wisdom. During the day, awareness arises from energy as appearances, that is the very outward manifestation from self-arisen wisdom. At night, clinging to appearances dissolves into energy, energy dissolves into the base. Therefore, temporarily abiding in the luminosity that does not conceptualize anything, is the self-arisen wisdom of sleep, Samsara
