The characteristic basis of the Mahayana path of severance: It symbolizes what can be called the Mahayana path of meditation. Whatever arises after the completion of the Mahayana path of seeing and is encompassed by the virtues of the Mahayana, becoming the cause for the first moment of the Mahayana path of no more learning to arise in the mindstream. The characteristic basis is all the virtues belonging to the sphere of the nature of the ten grounds. Divided, there are three types of meditation paths: small, medium, and large, each divided into three, making nine in total. Among them, the smallest of the small is the second ground, the stainless ground, which is the most excellent of the discipline perfections. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Because it is free from the defilement of immoral conduct and effort, it is called the stainless ground.' The medium of the small is the third ground, the illuminating ground, which is the perfection of patience. As stated in the same text: 'It is a great appearance of Dharma, therefore it is called the illuminating.' The largest of the small is the fourth ground, the radiating ground, which is the perfection of diligence. As stated in the same text: 'Thus, the Dharma in accordance with the aspects of enlightenment, like a fire that burns intensely, that ground possessing it, burning the two, is therefore called the radiating.' The smallest of the medium is the fifth ground, the very difficult to train ground. Again, as stated in the same text: 'Making all sentient beings fully ripen, and also protecting one's own mind, the wise find it very difficult to train, therefore it is said to be very difficult to train.' The medium of the medium is the sixth ground, the manifest ground, which is the perfection of wisdom. As stated in the same text: 'Relying on the perfection of wisdom, samsara and nirvana, because both are manifested here, it is called the manifest ground.' The largest of the medium is the seventh ground, the far-gone ground, which is the perfection of skillful means. As stated in the same text: 'Because it is connected to the one path of going, it is considered the far-gone ground.' And as stated in the Praise of the Dharmadhatu: 'Having crossed the mud of the ocean of samsara, therefore it is called the far-gone ground.' The smallest of the large is the eighth ground, the immovable ground, which is the perfection of strength. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Because it is unmoved by the two conceptions, it is considered the immovable ground.' The medium of the large is the perfection of aspiration, the one fully endowed with excellent intelligence.

Named Intellect Virtuous. This ground is excellent wisdom. Thus it is said. The greatest of the great, the tenth ground, the Dharma Cloud, is the perfection of wisdom. In that very sutra it says: Like two clouds pervading the realm of the sky, therefore it is called the Dharma Cloud. Thus it is said. That is also because the two clouds of samadhi and dharani pervade the sky of those to be tamed. By raining down the rain of Dharma, it accomplishes the benefit and happiness of beings, like the Tathagata. In the Uttaratantra it says: The conduct of the Bodhisattva, the subsequent attainment of the Tathagatas, and the true saviors of sentient beings, are equal in this world. Thus it is said. That is also because the manner of their activity is similar, hence it is said thus, but the manner of both the action and the agent, the Buddha is superior. In that very sutra it says: Although it is so, what is the difference between a speck of dust, the water in the hoofprint of an ox in the ocean, and the difference between a Buddha and a Bodhisattva? Thus it is said. Thus, the nine grounds of the path of meditation are divided according to the nature of the nine great, medium, and small antidotes to their respective obscurations. It is divided according to the nature of the nine ways of generating qualities. Fourth, among the five special dharmas, the difference of antidotes is in relation to abandoning the defilements of the nine grounds. The two, the path of application and the path of no interruption, are the antidotes of abandonment. The path of liberation is the antidote of the basis. The path of distinction is the antidote of prolongation. That is also because the coarse obstacles that have arisen as the object to be abandoned in the continuum prior to that ground are abandoned, and this is called the path of application. When that ground and that ground are first arising, the seed of that defilement is actually abandoned, and this is the path of no interruption. From the second moment of that ground, the actual nature of the ground is the path of liberation. At the end of the ground, having obtained special qualities and proceeding to the higher ground, this is called the path of distinction. The difference of abandonment is that all that is to be abandoned by seeing is abandoned. The coarse aspects of what is to be abandoned by meditation are abandoned. One enters into abandoning the subtle aspects. That is also because the nature of the innate afflictive obscurations and the cognitive obscurations are two. Divided, there are four. From the door of the entity, there are six: desire, anger, pride, ignorance, the view of the aggregates as a self, and the view of holding to extremes. Divided from the door of the realm, in the desire realm there are six. In the two upper realms, excluding anger, there are five each, that is, ten, totaling sixteen. Divided from the door of the ground
