. For the sake of benefiting sentient beings, these actions are manifested. The meaning of this is: It should be understood as the realm of the Avatamsaka, completely pure. When a Bodhisattva enters a room, they generate the thought that all sentient beings may attain the city of liberation. When sleeping, may I attain the body of a Buddha. When dreaming, may I realize all dharmas as dreams. When waking up, may I awaken from ignorance. When rising, may I attain the form body of a Buddha. When dressing, may I wear the clothes of shame and embarrassment. When tying a belt, may the roots of virtue be connected. When sitting on a cushion, may I attain the Vajra seat, and so on, practicing as it is said. The in and out breathing is a preliminary method for accomplishing Samadhi, subduing discursive thoughts. By holding the mind on the place where the breath goes in and out of the nostrils, discursive thoughts are subdued. The conventional Bodhicitta is the four immeasurables such as love, and the ultimate Bodhicitta is to meditate in the state of emptiness without any scattering of remembrance or thought. As it is said in the Bodhicaryavatara: When discursive thoughts are pacified, Bodhicitta should be cultivated. Second, among the three ways of meditating specifically, the lesser accumulation path is the four mindfulnesses. The first meditation is the mindfulness of the body: In meditative equipoise, meditate like the sky, and in the post-meditative state, meditate on impurity, illusion, and so on. For the mindfulness of feelings, in meditative equipoise, meditate on non-arising, and in the post-meditative state, whatever is felt is suffering, and like a water tree, it has no essence. For the mindfulness of mind, in meditative equipoise, meditate on emptiness by nature, and in the post-meditative state, meditate on non-ceasing and non-abiding. For the mindfulness of dharmas, in meditative equipoise, meditate on equality, and in the post-meditative state, meditate on the eight similes of illusion, and so on. By meditating on the four mindfulnesses of the lesser accumulation path, one enters the four truths of the path of seeing. Thus, first, by knowing the body as suffering, one enters the knowledge of suffering. Second, by knowing feelings as suffering, one enters the abandonment of the origin. By meditating on the mind as impermanent, one enters the manifestation of cessation, the cessation of permanence. By meditating on dharmas as selfless,

Turning away from attachment and engaging in the practice of the path, as it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "In order to abandon bad rebirths, for the sake of the cause of desire, for the sake of the basis and non-ignorance, one should engage in the four truths, and cultivate mindfulness." Thus it is said. In the intermediate stage of the accumulation path, one does not generate unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, and one cuts off the continuity of those that have already arisen. In order to generate wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, and to increase those that have already arisen, one exerts effort and cultivates antidotes such as selflessness and illusion or dreams, etc. As it says in the same text: "Having fully understood all the unfavorable factors and antidotes, in order to abandon the unwholesome, diligence arises in four ways." Thus it is said. In the great stage of the accumulation path, one also cultivates the four legs of miraculous power. By cultivating the union of calm abiding and insight, with one-pointed concentration of mind within, one accomplishes the desired meanings such as the eye, clairvoyance, and miraculous powers. As it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "By abiding there, being workable, all meanings will be attained." Thus it is said. In this context, miraculous powers and so forth are accomplished by the power of the mind of meditative absorption being workable, therefore it is called the legs of miraculous power. These are the four concentrations of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. Thus, when one first gathers the mind on a single object of focus and abides steadily, if discursive thoughts arise, one immediately does not let them scatter, but gathers the mind on the object of focus with one-pointedness. Again and again, one cultivates in this way. As it says in the Sutra Ornament: "Having fixed the mind on the object, one should not let its continuity be distracted. Having quickly realized distraction, one should fix it on that again." Thus it is said. Secondly, in the path of joining, there are two aspects: the basis and the nature. There are two bases: the basis of the body is any of the five types of beings. The basis of the mind is any of the six meditative grounds. In the nature, there are three aspects: cause, result, and essence. The first is the Mahayana accumulation path, as it says in the Madhyāntavibhāga: "Generating that which is in accordance with the part of liberation." Thus it is said. The result is the three paths of seeing, cultivation, and no more learning. The essence has four aspects: characteristic, basis, division, and special qualities. The characteristic is the virtue belonging to the Mahayana that arises before the path of seeing, having completed the Mahayana accumulation path. The basis is the Mahayana path of joining.
