Thus it is. The nature of lineage is spoken of from the aspect of the arising of qualities, and the examples of treasure and tree have already been given. Such a realm, its ultimate nature, I think it must exist in aggregation, but it is not seen directly through the inclination of conceptual mind. From the first ground, one sees a part, and at the level of Buddhahood, one sees manifestly what the nature is. Just as when the sun rises, one does not see it without eyes, but sees it with eyes. The ultimate of the self-born is: "It is to be realized only through faith." "Even though the disc of the sun blazes with light," "Without eyes, one does not see." Thus it is said. Therefore, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas, the three lower noble ones, do not see it as it is. Bodhisattvas, the noble ones, are like a small child seeing the sun in the sky, but not seeing the sun that pervades all realms. "From the house where he is born, a small child," "Like the image of the sun, so too the noble ones." Thus it is said. Regarding the Buddha seeing all, the commentary on the Uttaratantra states: "Like the sun in the cloudy sky, here you are one-sidedly wise. Even the noble ones with pure eyes of wisdom do not fully see all. Bhagavan, you, with your pure Dharmakaya and boundless wisdom, see all those limitless objects of knowledge pervading space." Thus it is said. That is also the realm of ultimate truth, and seeing this nature is called seeing ultimate truth, but emptiness, which is nothing at all, is not ultimate truth either. That is because the absence of self, etc., is taught as an antidote to the clinging to self by children, ordinary beings, and beginners. In reality, one should know that the realm is luminous, uncompounded, and spontaneously present. As it says in that very text: "In brief, these four types of individuals are regarded as not having the eyes to see the Tathagatagarbha. What are the four? They are ordinary beings, Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have newly entered the vehicle. As it is said: "Bhagavan, this Tathagatagarbha is not the domain of those who have fallen into the view of the aggregates, those who delight in perverted views, and those whose minds are distracted by emptiness."

It is so. Thus it is. Fourth, there are two reasons for relying on reasoning: asking questions from the perspective of dispelling doubts, and explaining the answers to those questions. First: Like clouds, like dreams, like illusions, in each of those places, all knowable things are said to be empty in every way. Having said that, why do the Buddhas say here that sentient beings have the essence of the Tathagata? It is said. That is, in the intermediate sutras, it is said that all phenomena are impermanent like clouds, unreal like dreams, and that the aggregation of causes and conditions is without self-nature like illusions, and so on. But here, because it exists immutably from the beginning, it is permanent; because it abides in its own nature, it is solitary; because it is not produced by causes and conditions, it is shown to be unconditioned. Because these are contradictory, how is it? To dispel the doubts of those with inferior intelligence, as an answer: This essence is also empty because of faults and conditioned things, and so on. But it is not the emptiness of abandoning its own qualities, but rather it has a nature with distinctions. The realm is emptied by adventitious things, but it is not emptied by the supreme Dharma, which has a nature without distinctions. As it has been said before. "Second, the answer to that question is: The ultimate reality, the realm of self-nature purity, is unconditioned, like the sky. The karma, afflictions, and the happiness and suffering of samsara that depend on it appear like clouds. Among them, afflictions cause suffering through improper attention, which is like a cloud; karma is without self-nature but appears, like a dream; the aggregates produced by afflictions and karma are shown like illusions and emanations. Therefore, it acts as an antidote to the clinging to the perception of self, which is clinging to one extreme. Below that, five faults arise, such as clinging to the extreme of emptiness. In order to eliminate these faults, the essence of the ultimate realm, the Tathagatagarbha, is taught. The ultimate reality is devoid of all conditioned appearances, afflictions, karma, and the meaning of ripening are spoken of like clouds, and so on. Afflictions are like clouds, karma is like enjoying a dream, the ripening of afflictions and karma, the aggregates are like illusions and emanations. Having established it in that way before, again in this supreme lineage, in order to abandon the five faults.
