Honey is, sought by wise people for the sake of benefit, seeing those using methods to make sentient beings, completely separate (from suffering) in the same way. The great sage with the omniscient eye, seeing the lineage realm like honey, its obscurations like bees, completely eliminates them. Thus it is. The third analogy is like a fruit inside a husk: Just as the essence of a husked fruit, people do not enjoy, whether seeking for food or other benefits, those people take it out from the husk. Similarly, the afflictions of sentient beings, mixed with defilements, until Buddhahood, without liberation from the defilements, the Buddhas do not gather in the three realms. Thus it is. The fourth analogy is like gold in mud: Just as extremely precious gold, falling into rotten mud, the fearless Dharma nature is there, even existing for many hundreds of years, the gods with divine eyes see it there, and say to people: Here is gold, the best of jewels, it should be refined, and accomplished with jewels. Similarly, the Muni sees the merits of sentient beings, like impure, affliction-drowning, in order to remove those affliction-muds, he pours down the rain of the true Dharma for sentient beings. Thus it is. The fifth analogy is like a treasure underground: Just as in a poor person's house, there is an inexhaustible treasure underground, that person does not know it, and the treasure does not say to him: I am here. Similarly, the treasure hidden in the mind, the stainless nature, the indelible Dharma nature, because it is not realized, the suffering of poverty, beings constantly experience. Thus it is. The sixth analogy is like a tree sprout in a shell: Just as in fruits like mangoes, the existing seeds, sprouts are indestructible Dharmas, from the conditions of plowing, water, etc., gradually accomplishing the things of the king of trees. The ignorance and other fruits of sentient beings, the Dharma realm of goodness contained in the outer skin, similarly relying on those virtuous conditions, gradually become the things of the victorious Muni.

Thus it is said. The seventh analogy is like a jewel image within tattered clothes: Like a Victorious One's image made of precious jewels, Covered by tattered, foul-smelling clothes, So that gods might see it on the road and liberate it, Like speaking of that meaning to those on the road. Likewise, from beginningless time, in various ways, The very essence of the Sugata, obscured by afflictions, Even looking upon animals, just so, He shows the means for liberation. Thus it is said. The eighth analogy is like a lord of men dwelling in the womb of a wicked woman: Just as a woman, ugly and without a protector, Dwells in a place of no protection, Holding the splendor of a king in her womb, Yet not knowing that a lord of men is in her own belly. Cyclic existence is like a home without a protector, Like a woman with a womb, an impure being, What is there in her that protects? The stainless realm is like dwelling in her womb. Thus it is said. The ninth analogy is like a golden image in the mud of the earth: Just as the form of molten gold inside grows, While outside is the nature of peaceful earth, Those who see and know it remove the outer obscuration In order to purify the gold within. Those of self-nature, clear light, and stainlessness, Also suddenly appear, And beings like a source of jewels, Purify from obscurations and attain supreme enlightenment. Thus it is said. Thus, due to the nine natures that obscure the essence, these nine analogies are spoken. In general, this is an explanation of the analogies present in the realm of sentient beings. In particular, the four characteristics of virtue and non-virtue, which are the cause of samsara alone, present in the continuum of beings who have not yet entered the path, namely desire, hatred, delusion, and the intense arising of the mixture of these three equally, are shown by the lotus, the bee, the husk, and the mire. The nature of obscuring the essence by the habitual tendencies of ignorance present in the continuum of the Arhats of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas is shown by the single analogy of the treasure of the poor man underground. The obscurations to be abandoned by seeing on the Mahayana path, present in the continuum of ordinary beings who are still learning, and the obscurations to be abandoned by meditation on the continuum of the noble ones, are the bark and
