of the distinctions. Thus, the divisions of it are completely explained. That is, the essence of the luminous realm, for all appearances of beings, good and bad, Hearers, Solitary Realizers, Buddhas, and so forth, noble ones, high and low, good and bad, in terms of place, time, and essence, there is no good or bad, no decrease or increase. For example, pottery vessels, wooden vessels, jewel vessels, and so forth, appear as different and of varying quality, but the space inside those vessels has no good or bad. As it says in the Uttaratantra: "Just as the nature of non-conceptualization, like space, pervades everywhere, so too, the nature of mind, the immaculate realm, likewise goes everywhere." This is the determination of the general characteristic, and the ultimate quality is all-pervasive. "Inferior in form, intermediate and supreme, like space." So it is said. The appearance of good and bad is the difference between being freed from impurities and not being freed. Ordinary beings are obscured by the great darkness of obscuration, and have only a partial amount of qualities. Those who have thinned their impurities, the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, are noble ones with qualities. And those who have not abandoned all the grounds of unknowing, those heroes of mind who have attained the grounds and become superior, appear as noble ones. And compared to that, the Buddhas who are free from all obscurations appear as noble ones. According to this principle, the Arhats of Hearers and Solitary Realizers are not considered to be of the nature of Nirvana, but only to rest for a while from the suffering of samsara. As it says in that very text: "Because that Dharmakaya is the Thus-Gone One, that is the ultimate Nirvana, the truth of the noble ones. Therefore, like the sun and its rays, qualities are inseparable, so there is no Nirvana apart from the Buddhas themselves." And: "Therefore, until Buddhahood is attained, Nirvana is not attained. Just as one cannot look at the sun after abandoning light and rays." So it is said. Third, there are three divisions from the perspective of example and meaning: clearly distinguishing example and meaning, combining their similar qualities, and revealing the nature of the essence. First, as explained in the treatises of definitive meaning spoken in the final testament, in the Praise of the Dharmadhatu: "Just as when mixed with milk, the essence of butter is not visible, so too, when mixed with afflictions, the Dharmadhatu is not seen. Just as when all the milk is purified, the essence of butter becomes immaculate, so too, afflictions.

Through cultivation, the Dharmadhatu becomes extremely pure. Just as a lamp inside a vase, it cannot be seen even slightly. Similarly, within the vase of afflictions, the Dharmadhatu is not visible. From whichever direction a hole is made in the vase, the nature of light will appear from that direction. When that vase is shattered by the Vajra of Samadhi, at that time it will illuminate all the way to the end of the sky. Just as a precious Vaidurya gem is always bright, but if it is inside a stone, its light is not visible. Similarly, although the Dharmadhatu is extremely pure, when obscured by afflictions, its light does not shine in Samsara, but it shines in Nirvana. Because there is a realm, by doing actions, one can see the Sal tree. Because there is no realm, even if actions are done, only some afflictions will arise. Just as when covered by husks, the rice fruit is not visible. Similarly, that which is covered by afflictions is not called a Buddha. Just as when freed from husks, the fruit itself becomes visible. Similarly, when liberated from afflictions, the Dharmakaya becomes fully manifest. It is said in the world that a water tree has no essence, but its fruit is the essence, just like that which is eaten first. From the essence-less Samsara, when freed from the cage of afflictions, its fruit is Buddhahood, becoming the nectar of all sentient beings. Thus, with the six examples of butter, lamp, jewel, gold, grain, and tree fruit, the three stages of the ground, path, and result are explained. Maitreya uses nine examples, the first example being the Buddha enveloped in a lotus bud, as stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: Just as in a lotus of bad color, dwells the Tathagata blazing with a thousand marks, unseen by the immaculate divine eye, like taking it out from the bud of a water-born lotus. Similarly, the Tathagata, with the Buddha's eye, sees his own nature, abiding in places like the Avici hell, with unobstructed and endless compassion, liberates us from obscurations. Thus it is said. The second example is like the honey of bees, as: Just as a gathering of beings
