The four applications of mindfulness. The four right exertions of the middling sort. The four legs of magical power of the great sort. In the path of joining, the five faculties at the levels of heat and peak. The five powers at the levels of forbearance and supreme dharma. In the path of seeing, the seven branches of enlightenment. In the path of meditation, one cultivates the eightfold noble path. The first is the initial path of all paths, the small accumulation path. The initial practitioner who enters this path cultivates the mindfulness of the body as an antidote to attachment to one's own and others' bodies. That is, as an antidote to general desire, one contemplates one's own and others' bodies and all appearances as skeletons, thereby preventing desire. As the Treasury states: "Skeletons for all those with attachment." Thus. As an antidote to specific desires, one cultivates the eight kinds of conceptions, such as becoming swollen, becoming red, becoming infested with worms, and so on. When free from desire, one occasionally cultivates the mindfulness of observing the body in the body, like a water tree, and so on. Then one cultivates the mindfulness of feeling. For the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and indifference, one cultivates the conception of suffering and the conception of emptiness like a water tree. As the Sutra states: "Whatever feeling is felt, one should recognize all of it as suffering." Thus. Then one cultivates the mindfulness of mind. That is, in the aspect of calm abiding and insight, one holds the mind on the breath going in and out, pacifying thoughts, and the continuum of mind is the conventional truth, and if one examines it, it is the ultimate truth of indivisible moments, and in that state one cultivates the meaning of selflessness. Then one cultivates the mindfulness of dharmas. That is, on the dharmas included in formations and consciousness, one cultivates the selflessness, impermanence, and illusion-like nature of all internal and external entities. That is, having cultivated forms, feelings, and perceptions as the emptiness of the three, body, feeling, and mind, and having cultivated formations and consciousness with the mindfulness of dharmas, when the afflictions of attachment to the dharmas included in the five aggregates are reversed in various ways, the gross objects to be abandoned are suppressed, and one enters the higher path. That is, as the Treasury states: "On body, feeling, mind, and dharmas, one completely examines the two characteristics."

Therefore, as it is said, both the general and specific characteristics, each individually, should be meditated upon as the nature of the body being impure, feelings being painful, the mind being impermanent, and phenomena being selfless. Then, when the middling stage of the path of accumulation arises, one strives and meditates to prevent unwholesome things that have not arisen from arising, to abandon those that have arisen, to generate wholesome things that have not arisen, and to increase those that have arisen. Therefore, in order to completely abandon all unwholesome aspects, it is called right abandonment. Then, when the great stage of the path of accumulation arises, one meditates on the four concentrations of aspiration, effort, mind, and investigation. That is, in order, one meditates by generating single-pointed aspiration on the virtuous object of either conventional or ultimate truth; one continuously sustains that state with great effort; one makes the mind single-pointed; and one meditates through the gateway of thoroughly distinguishing the meaning with investigation. From this, the mind of meditative concentration is accomplished in whatever way is appropriate, and it is called the foot of miraculous power because the means or limbs of miraculous power are accomplished. Then, the path of joining arises in the continuum. Therein, in the two, warmth and peak, one meditates on the five faculties. These are the five faculties of faith, effort, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. Therein, one meditates with faith in the sixteen aspects of the four truths, in the manner of believing. One meditates with the joy of effort, with the mindfulness of not forgetting the conceptions of the objects, with the concentration of holding the mind single-pointedly on the object, and with the wisdom of distinguishing the objects. As it is said in the Treasury [Abhidharmakośa]: 'This is the field of activity of the four truths, the sixteen aspects arise from warmth, the peak is also the same as this.' What are the sixteen? Impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness are the four aspects of the truth of suffering; cause, origin, arising, and condition are the four of the truth of origin; selflessness, peace, excellence, and departure are the four of the truth of cessation; path, reason, practice, and deliverance are the four aspects of the truth of the path. Then there is patience and
