If it is said that it is not arising, but the main consciousness of the previous moment arises to hold the essence of the mental events of the present moment, and the mental events of the previous moment arise to hold the distinction of the main consciousness of the present moment, then it is not so. The eye consciousness that arises immediately after rising from meditative absorption, does it or does it not have a distinction appearing from it, without the mental events of the previous consciousness preceding it? If it does, then because pervasion is not established, the distinction that appears cannot be the result of the previous mental events. If it does not, then although the main consciousness manifests its essence, it does not manifest distinction, and thus one entity would have two parts, appearing and not appearing, which would be a fault. Furthermore, when the mental events of the eye consciousness immediately after rising from meditative absorption manifest distinction, is there or is there not a manifestation of essence? If there is, then even without the preceding main consciousness, the essence would manifest, and because pervasion is not established, the manifestation of essence should not be the result of the previous main consciousness. If there is not, then the mental events manifest distinction, but the essence does not manifest, and thus one entity would have two parts, appearing and not appearing. Secondly, to establish one entity, the main consciousness, which is only mind, and the mental events are one entity. Although all self-natures appear, from the aspect of manifesting essence, it is the main consciousness, and from the aspect of manifesting distinction, it is the mental events. Just as consciousness and impermanence are one entity, but consciousness is the aggregate of consciousness, and impermanence is the aggregate of formations. Similarly, one entity, from the aspect of manifesting essence, is the aggregate of consciousness, and from the aspect of manifesting distinction, it is the aggregate of formations, which is not contradictory. Therefore, mind and mental events are one entity, but the aspects are different. Because mind appears as dualistic, similarly, attachment and so on appear, or the desire for faith and so on appears. Are afflictions and virtuous qualities not existent? This is what is said in the Lankavatara Sutra. Therefore, they are one entity. Fourthly, non-associated formations, like the palm of the hand and the fist, are the state of form, mind, and mental events. The life faculty and similar kinds, and the four such as birth, and the nine heterogeneous and homogeneous ones, are as before. The state of all three, form, mind, and mental events, is the same as before, but attainment is not the state of other consciousnesses, because on the alaya consciousness, it is the place where other consciousnesses leave impressions.

The three Samadhis are not states of the body; rather, they are states where six or seven consciousnesses cease in the ālaya. The aggregates of names, etc., are not states of the characteristic of sound itself, but rather states where names, words, and letters appear to the mind and its retinue. The fifth, the unconditioned, is in accordance with the Sautrāntikas, who say that in addition to the first three, there are also suchnesses and the realms of phenomena. Although these texts are slightly superior to the Śrāvakas, they are still not good, so there is a general refutation and a specific refutation. First, appearances should not be mind, imputed should not exist, and the term "selflessness" should not be used, which should be understood by three points. The first point has already been stated in the context of refuting the Sautrāntikas. Second, if the appearance of two moons and universals are objects of knowledge, then they become other-powered, so how can they be imputed? If the object of attachment is the self of persons and the self of phenomena, then since the two selves do not exist, the basis for them does not exist. Since the definition of imputed does not exist, the signified imputed, which distinguishes different types, will also not exist. Third, when knowing the selflessness of phenomena, does it appear or not? If it appears, then it is an object of knowledge, so it cannot be emptiness; if it does not appear, then it is not an object of valid cognition, so it is not certain to have characteristics, so it is not appropriate to use the term "selflessness." Second, the specific refutation is divided into two: it is unreasonable for multiple appearances to be truly existent in one consciousness, and it is unreasonable for multiple appearances to be truly existent in multiple consciousnesses. First, if it is said that the consciousness that appears in various ways is the nature of one indivisible consciousness, then what prevents the acceptance of things with parts as real? If it is said that because of focusing on multiple parts, the true existence of one thing is negated, then the appearance of various things is also negated because of focusing on multiple parts, so the true existence of one indivisible consciousness is negated. Second, if multiple indivisible objects are truly existent in multiple consciousnesses, then since one consciousness does not fail to grasp multiple particles, the appearance of grossness will disappear. Second, the Cittamātrins who say that there are no external objects hold these five bases as follows: They believe that all phenomena, such as sound, meaning, and the appearance of two moons, are not the nature of both object and consciousness, but appear as if fabricated, even though they are not real entities.
