Uniquely, connecting existence and peace until enlightenment. Thus, since skillful means, compassion, and wisdom do not abide in either extreme, they transcend both existence and peace. The Ornament of Clear Realization states: 'Wisdom does not abide in existence, and compassion does not abide in peace.' Thus it is. Wisdom is merely realizing the selflessness of individuals, or grasping half of phenomena as being without inherent existence, which is the small of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Realizing the emptiness of the two selves is the Great Vehicle of Bodhisattvas. Diligence is small when one's enthusiasm wanes in a short time, and thus one abandons the benefit of others. Diligence with great enthusiasm for a long time is as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Even for the sake of a single virtuous thought in another's mind, one is not weary even for hundreds of millions of eons.' Thus it is. The Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds states: 'For countless sentient beings, over a long period, accomplishing the unsurpassed bliss of the Sugatas, fulfilling all the thoughts in their minds, what need is there to mention constant giving?' Thus it is. The former states: 'Carrying the heavy burden of sentient beings on their heads, it is not beautiful for the supreme heroes to walk slowly. Since self and others are tightly bound by various bonds, it is proper to exert a hundredfold diligence.' Thus it is. Skillful means is small when the means to seek peace for oneself alone is small, and preventing [suffering] is great. The Ornament of Clear Realization states: 'Those Hearers who seek peace, are led to peace by the All-Knowing; those who benefit beings, accomplish the benefit of the world through the Path-Knowing.' Thus it is. Accomplishment is small when it is on the side of peace. Non-abiding Nirvana is great, it is great. As the words of the Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Tree state: 'Turning to one side of peace, truly pacified in the Dharmadhatu, surpassing all the small ones is the non-abiding Nirvana. Since the benefit of self and others is spontaneously accomplished, it accomplishes benefit and happiness, it is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, possessing all the desired treasures.' Thus it is. Activity is that Hearers and Solitary Realizers are pacified in the Dharmadhatu, so the benefit of others does not arise. That very text states: 'The mind's activity is absorbed in solitary peace, there is no thought of benefiting others.' Thus it is. The Great Vehicle accomplishes benefit and happiness from the time of Buddhahood until samsara is emptied, as the former states: 'Likewise, as long as samsara is not empty, I desire that activity not cease.' Thus it is. Furthermore, the Distinguishing the Two [Truths] states: 'Whoever has great wisdom and compassion'

It is called Mahayana, and the smaller ones are called Hinayana. In the Sutra of the Excellent Manifestation of Wisdom, it says: "With compassion, one focuses on sentient beings; with wisdom, one pervades the realm of Dharma. This is called Mahayana; others are the opposite of that." Regarding the divisions of Mahayana, there are many differences in classification and summarization due to the views of individual teachers. Here, we mainly explain from the perspectives of the Yogacara-Cittamatra and Madhyamaka schools. First, in the Cittamatra school, there are two establishments: general and specific. The first view holds that all knowable things are included in the three natures: parikalpita (imputed), paratantra (dependent), and parinispanna (perfected). Among them, the parts that are expressed and analyzed by names and concepts are parikalpita. If subdivided, there are two types: one is what does not exist in reality but can be expressed in name, such as the illusory appearance of a double moon, and concepts like "self," which belong to parikalpita that lacks characteristics. The other is nominal parikalpita, which refers to the analysis of concepts such as names, words, and letters, and all the ways of classifying and describing things, such as the methods of classifying from word meaning, expresser and expressed, to aggregates and elements, etc., which are all constructed by conceptual thought. Although they are not directly related to the things being classified, they appear as a means of understanding things, so they are called parikalpita. Paratantra is also divided into two types: impure paratantra refers to the manifestation of various phenomena of the external and internal world due to the power of various habitual tendencies, including the external environment, meaning, and body. The external environment refers to the five objects of sense, such as form. Meaning refers to the eight consciousnesses that arise from other causes and conditions. The body refers to the aggregates of appropriation. These depend on other causes and conditions such as karma and habitual tendencies, so they are called paratantra. Pure paratantra refers to extremely pure Buddha-fields and wisdom, etc., which are analyzed from the perspective of temporary dependence on the causes and conditions of purified karma and power. Parinispanna is also divided into two types: the first is the unchanging parinispanna, which refers to the alaya-vijnana of the meaning of reality, the Dharmadhatu, the naturally luminous essence, the Tathagatagarbha. As stated in the Uttaratantra: "As it was in the beginning, so it is later, the unchanging Suchness." And in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Although there is no difference between before and after, Suchness is purified."
