Just as a mirror reflects its own image, the consciousness of an object arises in the second moment because it imparts an image similar to itself. In the present moment, because the previous moment imparts an image to the hidden meaning, an image similar to oneself appears in the present. For the future, the present imparter imparts an image to the outside, so consciousness appears as the image of the object, and experiencing similarity is called understanding the meaning, which is the imputation of the term. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika, "When experiencing similarity, the consciousness that experiences meaning is expressed." And, "For the aspect of consciousness with images, in reality, these two are different, but because it is similar to an image, only an imputation can be felt." Therefore, they assert that it has images. Understanding of meaning is called understanding of the object because it is directed towards the object. Since consciousness experiences self-awareness and clarity in that very moment, experiencing oneself is its characteristic. Because of clearly experiencing oneself: "The appearance of similarity is the object." "Therefore, of all consciousness, the object, experience, and self exist in different states." This is what is said. For cases such as the appearance of two moons, although the image of two moons appears in consciousness, it is called an illusion because there are no two moons imparting the image externally. The Sautrāntikas do not say that it is an illusion because the object is false. For mental consciousness and its related mental events, mental direct perception imparts an image through the second moment of the object of sense consciousness, and apprehends meaning because of its similarity. In dreams, the images of horses and cattle appear, and for conceptual mind, the general meaning of past and future, object and nature mixed together appears unclearly. Although appearance is the essence of consciousness, it is an illusion because there is nothing external imparting the image. All consciousness that is clearly experienced, self-awareness, is not an illusion. Non-associated formations, like a fist when the palms are clenched, are the state of form, mind, and mental factors. Therefore, they do not transform into other substances from these three. Attainment is the state of obtaining predispositions in the mind. The three samādhis are the state of cessation of mind and mental factors in the body. The life faculty is the state of equal share of form, mind, and mental factors.

Similarity is also the state where those three are similar. Birth is also the state of obtaining what those three did not have before. Aging is also the state of those three changing. Existence is also the state of those three continuing to exist. Impermanence is also the state of those three continuously ceasing. Ordinary beings are also the state of not having obtained the superior Dharma of those three. Entering and so on are also the state of the cause and effect of those three. The collection of names and so on, the three, are the state of the terms of sound. The three unconditioned things, like the son of a barren woman, are completely non-existent, so it is said that they are without substance. The unreasonableness based on those aspects is also sixfold: external objects, the ultimate truth, are unreasonable; coarse appearances are the nature of consciousness, which is unreasonable; the meaning of creating appearances cannot be established; it is unreasonable that the mind is completely absent during meditative absorption; the general meaning is unreasonable as an object of cognition; and the characteristic of sound itself cannot be an expression. The first has already been refuted because the Vaibhashika school has been refuted. Secondly, if coarse appearance is the nature of consciousness, then how can one refute that suffering and happiness are not different? Experiencing happiness and suffering as different, if non-difference is refuted, since coarse appearance is consciousness, and since experience is different from consciousness, why is it not refuted that it is the same as the nature of consciousness? Since consciousness is established as a single nature, it is not the one who grasps the inner self, and since happiness and suffering gather in one mind, because one refutes the other, it can only become contradictory. Thirdly, the visual consciousness sees form, even if the three conditions are complete, if the meaning of creating appearances is inferred from the sign of occasionality, then from the sign of occasional appearance, why is the eating of meat not established? Fourthly, during meditative absorption, if the mind arises later from a body without mind, since the previous reasoning has refuted it, it will become an admission of arising from no cause. Fifthly, if the general meaning is an object of cognition, then there will be no momentary mixture. Sixthly, the characteristic of sound itself, because the general meaning is not apparent and is not an object of attachment. If it is not so, then by blocking the ears, from hearing the characteristic of sound itself, the wisdom that realizes the expressed object will directly arise. If one considers it an expression simply because it is the cause of realizing the expressed object,
