The nature of speech is harmful. It is free from the six evil treatises that lack compassion. It possesses the great meaning of accomplishing temporary happiness and ultimate liberation. The three treatises that accomplish enlightenment and abandon all the sufferings of samsara are in accordance with the customs of the Buddhas. Moreover, the ways of expressing those meanings are: treatises that gather the scattered into one, those that reveal the hidden, those that extensively explain the categories, those that point out the difficult points, those that clarify the order of words, those that condense and indicate the meaning of words, and those that distinguish the upper and lower sections, etc., with countless orders. They are divided into chapters, explanations, collections, and sections. They are in prose, verses, mixed forms, and continuous order. The texts of different sections are clearly explained as small, medium, large, and great. The Buddha's teachings are manifested very clearly, and they are divided into four types: direct meaning, definitive meaning, intention, and hidden intention, so that the teachings may last long. As it is said in the commentary: "All dharmas are included in the sutras and treatises. The well-spoken words and their commentaries, by their power, this Shakya's teaching will last long in this world." Thus it is said. The etymology is: The word "sha" in "shatra" is given the suffix of "sa", meaning to tame, and the word "tra" is given the suffix of "ya", meaning to protect. It possesses the qualities of taming and protecting. As it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Because it possesses both taming and protecting, it is a great treatise." Thus it is said. The need is to clarify the meaning of the sutras that are firm and difficult to understand, and to show the path of liberation, thereby guiding beings. As it is said in the commentary: "The meaning of the sutras is clear, it has the meaning of entering liberation. That treatise is very vast, and the wise take it with respect." Thus it is said. The difference between sutras and treatises is: The dharma that is taught arises from the main cause of the Buddha, and it possesses the path to accomplish the two benefits, which is the supreme sutra. As it is said in the Uttaratantra: "Whatever is meaningful and related to the Dharma, is said in the three realms to abandon afflictions, the qualities of peace.

What is true speech? That is the speech of the sages; anything contrary to that is not. Thus it is said. Any Dharma principle that is expounded, not relying on the blessings of the Buddha, but by a person who has gathered other lineages, who composes a work that clarifies the path to liberation as an explanation of the Buddha's teachings and treatises, is a treatise. As it says in that very text: "Whoever expounds, influenced solely by the Victorious One (Buddha), spoken by a faithful person without distraction, in accordance with the path to liberation, that too is accepted with the crown of the head, like the words of a sage." Thus it is said. Regarding how to teach and listen, there are three aspects. Among them, the characteristics of the teacher who explains are: From the Ornament of the Sutras: "A spiritual friend is tamed, peaceful, thoroughly pacified, has exerted effort in virtues, is especially rich in scriptures, has realized reality, is skilled in speaking, possesses love, has abandoned weariness, and should be relied upon." And from the Vajra Arrangement Tantra: "The teacher is full of treasures, complete like a river." "Possessing vows and commitments, with a heart of compassion, skilled and diligent in benefiting others, the vajra secret teacher, should be relied upon in every way." Thus it is said. The characteristics of the student who listens are: From the scriptures: "Respect for the lama, pure morality, diligence in meditation and recitation, strict and gentle, possessing patience, abiding in guarding vows, well-spoken, possessing Dharma." Thus it is said. From the former (i.e., the Vajra Arrangement Tantra): "A fortunate one is respectful and generous, with steadfast and broad intelligence, diligent in practice, possessing supreme Dharma, compassion, and commitment, should be known as a vajra disciple." Thus it is said. The nature of common Dharma practice is that the preliminary is generating the mind of enlightenment, the main part is grasping the meaning of what is heard, and the conclusion is dedicating to enlightenment, in these three ways. If it is a sutra, then listen from the state of seeing appearances as like the eight examples of illusion; if it is mantra, then listen and grasp the meaning without distraction, in the state of visualizing clearly the deity and mandala of what is being taught and listened to. At that time, focusing the mind one-pointedly on the words and meaning of the Dharma, abiding in the mind without distraction, is calm abiding; the nature of the words and meaning appearing separately, and understanding the meaning, is insight. From the Sutra of the Array of Qualities: "Manjushri, in this, merely listening, focusing the mind one-pointedly without distraction, is the samadhi of calm abiding that accords with the sound, and separately
