Some say that treatises have a fixed number. For example, aggregates and so on are also a kind of statement. They believe that this is because for each affliction, there is a corresponding antidote, and the number of treatises is determined according to the number of antidotes. But this does not mean that the number of treatises must be fixed. Therefore, it should be understood that the number of treatises is determined according to the completeness of the antidotes to afflictions. The definition of the Buddha's words is: spoken by the supreme master. The purpose of the Buddha's words is: to enable sentient beings to achieve temporary and ultimate benefits. As it is said in Yeshe Gyawa (Vast Wisdom): "To accomplish the two benefits of sentient beings, the Bhagavan speaks the Buddha's words. In the assembly, the lion's roar, thereby causing the white Dharma to increase, and all the diseases of afflictions to be pacified." Now let's talk about the classification of treatises that explain the Buddha's intention. It is divided into two aspects: the characteristics of the author (the commentator) and the nature of the treatise being written. First of all, the best author is someone who has directly seen the truth of Dharma, such as Nāgārjuna and Āryadeva, Asaṅga and so on. The intermediate author is someone who can directly see the deity, receive the deity's blessings, and be blessed by the Great Compassionate Avalokiteśvara, such as Candrapa and Śāntideva and so on. The lowest author also needs to be proficient in the five sciences and have the oral instructions of the lineage of masters, such as the teacher Śrī Guhya, Jñānagarbha, Śākyamati and so on. The five sciences are: grammar and logic, etc. are external sciences, the three pitakas, etc. are internal sciences, Buddha statues and temples, etc. are craftsmanship, the eight branches and Soma-rāja, etc. are medicine, and the eight kinds of divination, etc. are astrology. The eight kinds of divination are: divination for men, divination for women, divination for mountains and trees, divination for oceans and water, divination for clothes, divination for jewels, divination for horses, divination for elephants. Having the oral instructions of the lineage, as it is said in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Those who want to explain the sutras, briefly give oral instructions, so-called these oral instructions, because they contain the essence of meaning, contain debate and answers and connections, and also contain words and meanings." Like this, although there are countless people who are proficient in different fields and have attained accomplishments, the well-known Six Ornaments and Eight Excellences are like the sun, moon, and jewels. The Six Ornaments are: Nāgā

Śākyaprabha, Asaṅga, Vasubandhu, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, Guṇaprabha. The eight supreme ones: In addition to the above, add Āryadeva, Candragomin, and the three heroes, and subtract Dignāga. The nature of the authored treatises has five aspects: Definition: Authored by a qualified author as a commentary on the Buddha's words, possessing the qualities of both taming and protecting. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because it tames all the enemies of afflictions, and protects from the miseries of bad migrations, it is called a treatise due to its qualities of taming and protecting, which are not found in other systems." Basis: Relying on the author's own conditions, the expressed meaning appearing in the words, sentences, and letters of the speaker, and the nature appearing in the mind of the listener. Classification: Treatises divided from the root Tripitaka, which are also of three types. Mainly based on the study of Vinaya, as stated in the Sūtrālaṃkāra: "Because of transgressions, arising, and overcoming, definite arising and the individual, establishment and good distinction, and because it can define, it is Vinaya." Mainly based on the study of mind, the same text states: "Because of places, nature, and the explanation of Dharma meanings, it is Sūtra." Mainly based on the study of wisdom, the same text states: "Because of the cause of direct realization and repeatedly, overcoming realization, it is Abhidharma." Based on these principles, the treatises of Vinaya, Sūtra, Abhidharma, and Mantra are composed separately. These are also free from the six treatises of externalists and possess the three qualities of internalists, as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi in "the distinctions established in what is heard, thought, and meditated": "Meaningless, inverted meaning, and meaningful, diligent in hearing, debating, and practicing, without compassion, cunning, abandoning suffering, the six are free, the three are possessed, it is considered a treatise." Among them, the four Vedas and others are treatises without true meaning; those who claim to achieve liberation through views of permanence and annihilation are treatises of inverted meaning; poetics and others are treatises diligent in hearing; logic and others are diligent in debate; defeating enemy armies and others are evil cunning; sacrificing cows and others as offerings is considered Dharma.
