Sa. Thus, the tantra of the signifying means, not arising perfectly in one's own continuum, is a means because it signifies, and is called a continuum because it constantly abides. Thus it is said in between. Those means are inseparable from meaning and are inherently present as one's own nature. Vajradhara only sees what is there as there and clearly speaks of it. However, it is not said that something is absent in the nature of awareness. Awareness is effortlessly self-settled, the means of original liberation, trekchö, and the practice of remaining in the spontaneously appearing luminosity of tögal ensures liberation, it is merely making manifest what was already there. Thus, the nature of what is signified by what is taught is pervasive because the expanse of awareness is inseparable. Because it pervades from that definition, it is called a continuum. If divided, there are emptiness and clarity, two. The nature of the signifying means is that which abides as the means of realization. That itself says: Those who realize them, are also pervasive as means. Thus it says. The definition is from that: It is a means because it signifies. Thus it says. If divided, there are tögal with effort and trekchö without effort, that itself says: Without effort, self-liberation, and with effort, taking into practice. Thus it says. Secondly, the nature of the continuum of self-nature is the nature of awareness, the self-illuminating lamp, complete with light. That itself says: The nature of the Tathagatas, the essence of the continuum is well divided. Neither samsara nor nirvana, knows this. The nature of indivisible vajra, the basis for signifying one's own continuum is one. The nature of emptiness is one. The mother who gives birth to the perfect Buddha. Thus it says. If divided, there are three: the continuum of the basis, the continuum of the essence, and the continuum of the quintessence. That itself says: The continuum of self-nature is like this, the basis, the essence, and the quintessence. Thus it says. First, the nature of the continuum of the basis is self-born wisdom. The essence of primordial luminosity is: the primordial protector, immutable light, the pure expanse, the lamp maker, immutable light, as such named, the wisdom that is empty, clear, and free from elaboration. If divided, there are three: essence, nature, and compassion. That itself says: The basis is essence, nature, and compassion, pervading and appearing in all. Thus it says. The nature of the continuum of the essence is the sound of luminosity in the heart.

Therefore, it exists together with appearance. As it itself says: The self-nature continuum of complete essence, all appearances are the continuum, everything is interconnected and formed. In the mandala of the self-nature citta, the great essence that is unborn and complete. Therefore, it is the condensation of essence, because it becomes the lifeblood of all, it is named the essence continuum. Thus it is said. If distinguished, there is the inner essence—wisdom, and the outer essence—radiance. The nature of the essence continuum is seen by combining the meaning of essence. As said in the Rosary: The gathering of all Buddhas, the essence of all entities, by gathering the essence it is called essence, empty-clear awareness is condensed into essence. Thus it is said. If distinguished, there is the essence of the base—appearing as form, the essence of the essence—manifesting as wisdom, the essence of the flower—arising as four lamps. As it itself says: The great bliss secret of all Buddhas, possessing base, essence, and flower, is the nature of self-awareness. Thus it is said. If well summarized, these three natures of essence, in order to show the complete and unerring part of liberation, therefore it is superior to all. As said in the Golden Flower Essence: Gathering the essence of all Buddhas, placing it in the hearts of all beings. Its essence is continuous, the pure essence gathered is called essence. Thus it is said. As said in the Continuum of Meaningful Effort: The very essence of all teachings is called the path of directly experiencing reality. Thus it is said. As said in the Vajra Co-equal with Space Continuum: Base, essence, and flower are the self-nature continuum of all Buddhas. In particular, the secret supreme is condensed into essence. This is like a person shooting an arrow on the other side of samsara. Thus it is said. Thus, the self-nature continuums exist in the three natures of base, path, and fruit. As said in the Rosary of Pearls: Through base, path, and fruit, being definitely grasped, therefore it is the self-nature continuum. Thus it is said. The continuum of the base is awareness, the continuum of the path is the four appearances, the continuum of the fruit is essence and three aspects. Furthermore, the wisdom of essence awareness has three aspects: entity, self-nature, and compassion, which are the three purities. Awareness manifesting as form, the dharmadhatu manifesting as color, the dharmadhatu awareness manifesting in space, these three are called the three manifestations. The three confidences are view, self-born wisdom, liberated from the beginning, so there is no need for effort.
