On a slightly drooping branch, The chief of Dharma protectors, the glorious Lord of the Tent (Mahākāla, Tibetan: dpal ldan gur gyi mgon po, Sanskrit transliteration: Śrīmat Gurnātha, meaning 'Glorious Lord of the Tent'), sits upon Rāhula (Tibetan: ro), dispelling obstacles. Holding a hooked knife in his right hand and a skull bowl in his left, grasping them up and down at his heart, holding two square wooden boards with jewel-topped ends in his embrace. On the right side are all male Dharma protectors, circling to the right like dust particles. On the left side are all female Dharma protectors, circling to the left like dust particles. Meditate that all male and female Dharma protectors reside in the field of refuge through the four activities (pacifying, increasing, magnetizing, and subjugating). At the base of the wish-fulfilling tree, in the four directions of the palace with four doors, meditate that the sixteen offering goddesses and the four great kings reside. Meditate that the sixteen offering goddesses and their many inner attendants offer outer flowers, incense, lamps, and perfumes, inner offerings of the five meats and five nectars, and secret offerings of white, yellow, red, and green consorts. The four great kings also face outward, preventing outer demons from entering and preventing inner accomplishments from leaking out, guarding the four directions of the palace. In front of the door to your east, turn inward with many ordinary people. On the right side, all male ancestors circle to the right. On the left side, all female ancestors circle to the left. All classes of obstructing spirits are behind you. All local deities and landowners are above you. All nearby harms are in front of you. These beings pervade the three realms, the four births, the six realms of existence, the intermediate state between existence and non-existence, up to the great golden foundation of Vajra ground, with all sentient beings as numerous as dust particles on the great earth. May these sentient beings, without confusion, offer faith to the field of refuge that is one with the heart of the noble Avalokiteśvara (Tibetan: spyan ras gzigs). Recite without interruption the sound of the venerable Mañjuśrī (Tibetan: 'jam pa'i dbyangs), the lord of speech, like the sound of 'Om Uri Uri' (Tibetan: ཨོཾ་ཨུ་རི་རི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ओम् उरि उरि, Sanskrit transliteration: oṃ uri uri, literal meaning: Om, Uri Uri). With a mind like that of the venerable Milarepa (Tibetan: mi la ras pa), who has no self-grasping, make the aim of prostrating to all beings. There is not one of these sentient beings who has not been my kind parent. All sentient beings who have been my parents desire happiness, but do not know the means to achieve it, and only experience suffering. Please act with my thoughts and compassion. Because I do not have the ability, may the kind root guru who possesses ability, and the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who possess all-knowing wisdom, liberate and protect these sentient beings from samsara through the magical power of the four activities. This is the lama's aspiration. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legs spoke of the uncommon oral tradition of the root guru. Later, Mati revised it. On the forehead, the water element's manifestation is Amitabha's (Limitless Light) body vajra nature, white Om At the throat, the fire element's manifestation is Ratnasambhava's (Jewel-born) speech vajra nature, red Ah At the heart, the wind element's manifestation is Amoghasiddhi's (Unfailing Accomplishment) mind vajra nature, blue Hum At the navel, the earth element's manifestation is Akshobhya's (Immovable) wisdom vajra nature, yellow Hoh At the secret place, the wisdom element's manifestation is Vajrasattva's (Vajra Being) Sva On the crown, the space element's manifestation is Akshobhya's (Immovable) Ha This is Mati's oral tradition. In general, any teacher who supremely enhances the qualities of body, speech, and mind; a doctrine that is fundamentally free from the defilement of harming others; and a philosophical system that is based on the four seals, possessing a correct view—those who speak of a flawless and virtuous path through these three are Buddhist. Buddhists take refuge in the Three Jewels, regarding the Buddha as the teacher, the Dharma as the actual refuge, and the Sangha as companions in practice. Generally, there are two types of refuge: worldly refuge and transcendent refuge. The first involves relying on worldly leaders, powerful individuals, or authorities, fearing minor issues like enmity. The second involves placing hope in the sacred refuge of the Three Jewels, which never deceive. This also includes the refuge of the lesser person, the intermediate person, and the great person. The first is when one fears the suffering of the lower realms and believes that the lama and the Three Jewels have the power to protect, thus relying on the Three Jewels for refuge from that fear. The second is when one fears the suffering of samsara and believes that the Three Jewels have the power to protect, thus relying on such refuge. The third is when one believes that the lama and the Three Jewels have the power to protect oneself and all beings as vast as space from all the fears of existence, samsara, and nirvana, thus relying on the Three Jewels to protect from those fears. The cause of these refuges arises from fear and faith. Fearing the various sufferings mentioned above, one seeks protection from them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
