Gyas! I prostrate to the Buddha, the glorious one, who first spoke the mantras in Jambudvipa (the continent where we live, also known as the rose-apple continent)! I prostrate to all Buddhas, past, present, and future! I take refuge in them! I prostrate to the one who turns the unsurpassed wheel of Dharma, Dipamkara (the Buddha who preceded Shakyamuni)! I prostrate to the king of Dharma who illuminates, the one who subdues all! I prostrate to the courageous one with all-knowing wisdom, Padma (Lotus)! I prostrate to the one with eyes, the protector, the Sugata (Buddha) who scatters widely! I prostrate to the unsurpassed guide, Kirti (Fame)! I prostrate to the one who shines like the sun, the one who brings happiness! I prostrate to the one who shows the mirror of Dharma, the one who sees the meaning! I prostrate to the one who holds the fearless discipline of tranquility, the one called Jaya (Victory)! I prostrate to the one with the thirty-two excellent marks, Tara Raja (King of Stars)! I prostrate to the perfectly enlightened one, the glorious one, Vipashyin (the Buddha who sees clearly)! I prostrate to the one with light and splendor, Ushnishin (the one with the crown protuberance)! I prostrate to the one with well-performed offerings and fame, the one who protects all! I prostrate to the one who utterly destroys the armies of Mara (the demon), the one who dispels wrong views! I prostrate to the Brahmin with glory, Kanaka Muni (Golden Sage)! I prostrate to the one who has compassion for all sentient beings, Kashyapa (Light Protector)! I prostrate to the Shakya Lion who shines, the golden one! I prostrate to the one without miserliness, the compassionate one, Maitreya (Loving-kindness)! I prostrate to all the Buddhas, and I take refuge in them! I prostrate to all the Buddhas who have taught the Dharma! I also prostrate to the Dharma that the Buddhas revere! I prostrate to the Sangha (community) to whom offerings bring great benefit! I prostrate to Shariputra (Sariputta), the foremost in wisdom among the Shravakas (listeners)! I prostrate to Maudgalyayana (Moggallana), the foremost in miraculous powers! I prostrate to Katyayana (Kaccana), the one who gives fearless Dharma talks! I prostrate to Kashyapa (Kassapa), the foremost in ascetic practices among the Shravakas! I prostrate to Kaundinya (Kondanna), the master of protectors! I prostrate to Ananda, the one who has heard much and holds the mantras! I prostrate to Dhritarashtra (Holder of the Nation), Virudhaka (Increasing), Virupaksha (Wide-Eyed), and Vaishravana (All-Hearing), the four great kings who protect the four directions! May that purpose be accomplished for me! Those who harbor hatred, And cause harm, please move away. Those who think with kindness, And wish to benefit, listen to me with joyful hearts! After saying this, recite the dharani sutras. If you wish to supplicate the venerable holy mother Tara, then: In the supreme place of Potala, Born from the green seed syllable (Tibetan: ཏཱཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ताṁ, Sanskrit Romanization: tāṁ, Literal meaning: seed syllable), The light of the seed syllable (Tibetan: ཏཱཾ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ताṁ, Sanskrit Romanization: tāṁ, Literal meaning: seed syllable) liberates beings. Please come, Tara, with your retinue. Offer the mandala with the ground anointed with scented water, etc. By the diadems of gods and demigods, Your lotus feet are touched, The one who liberates from all poverty, I prostrate to you, Mother Tara! From the eight great fears, You protect all the worlds, Having become the mother of all, I prostrate to you, Mother Tara! Venerable Holy Mother Tara, And all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who reside in the ten directions and three times, I prostrate to all with reverence. Flowers, incense, lamps, perfume, Food, music, and so on, Offering with actual and imagined offerings, Please accept, assembly of the holy ones. From beginningless time until now, The ten non-virtuous actions and the five heinous crimes, And all the sins of the mind being controlled by afflictions, I confess all of them. Hearers, solitary realizers, Bodhisattvas, And ordinary beings, and so on, Whatever merit has been accumulated in the three times, I rejoice in that merit. According to the thoughts of sentient beings, And the differences in their intelligence, The great, small, and common vehicles, Please turn the wheel of Dharma. Until samsara is not empty, Without passing into nirvana, with compassion, Look upon the sentient beings, Who are drowning in the ocean of suffering. Whatever merit I have accumulated, May it all become a cause for enlightenment, May I quickly become, A guide for leading beings! Then, recite the Twenty-One Taras as much as possible, and also speak of their benefits.
