Apart from such a general characteristic (dön spyi, general characteristic), all permanent (rtag pa, permanent) phenomena that are conceptually fabricated, when grasped by the mode of conceptual apprehension, can only appear as being obscured by the similar general characteristic, and cannot clearly and truly appear as the object of self-appearance (rang snang yul, object of self-appearance). Therefore, all these are merely objects of conceptual apprehension, not objects of appearance. Moreover, in the view of the Sautrāntika school (mdo sde pa, Sautrāntika school), permanent phenomena do not appear in the realm of direct perception (mngon sum, direct perception), but are merely considered to be objects that can be understood through inference. Śāntarakṣita's disciple, Kamalaśīla, in the Tattvasamgraha, mentioned that the Vaiseṣika school (bye rig, Vaiseṣika school) among the non-Buddhists (mu stegs, non-Buddhists) believes that the general type (rigs spyi, general type) of the vase, which appears like a vase in the conceptual apprehension of a vase, is the object of verbal designation (brda sbyor, verbal designation); the Sāṃkhya school (grangs can pa, Sāṃkhya school) believes that the principal nature (rang bzhin gtso bo, principal nature) existing in the nature (rang bzhin, nature) of the vase in the conceptual apprehension of a vase, which is transformed into the general type, is the object of verbal designation; while the Buddhists (nang ba pa, Buddhists) believe that what appears in the conceptual apprehension of a vase, and the meaning and imputation of the vase, the general characteristic or similarity of the two, appear in a mixed manner, this general characteristic is unreal (dngos med, unreal), merely an appearance, a mixture of appearance and imputation, which is considered to be the general type here, therefore, such a general characteristic is designated as the verbal designation of the vase by conceptual mind (rtog blo, conceptual mind). Both non-Buddhists and Buddhists agree that the general type of their respective schools is the object of verbal designation, but there are differences in the way the general type is recognized. The general type of non-Buddhists is permanent and substantial (rtag rdzas, permanent and substantial), while the general type of Buddhists is a conceptually imputed similarity, with such differences. Generally, in any mind, whether conceptual (rtog bcas, conceptual) or non-conceptual (rtog med, non-conceptual), when apprehending an object, the consciousness (shes pa, consciousness) in which the appearance of the object arises is a part of the object, and the consciousness belonging to the side of the subject (yul can, subject) becomes the apprehending part, and these two are mutually present. Therefore, both the apprehended aspect (gzung rnam, apprehended aspect) and the apprehending aspect ('dzin rnam, apprehending aspect) are the nature of consciousness (shes rdzas, nature of consciousness), and the similar general characteristic that appears as the conceptually apprehended aspect is merely unreal. For example, this kind of inexpressible appearance is like verbally apprehending 'This is a vase' through sound concept. When saying 'This is not a pillar, it is a vase,' the vase is the basis of negation (dgag gzhi, basis of negation), the pillar is the object of negation (dgag bya, object of negation), and 'not a pillar' is the cutting off of the object of negation (dgag bya bcad pa, cutting off of the object of negation), thus it is explained clearly. If, from the ultimate truth (don dam pa, ultimate truth), the object of sound exists, then it is necessary to directly designate the verbal designation to the self-characteristic (rang mtshan, self-characteristic) like a vase, but this is impossible. Because there is no object of verbal designation that is conceptually designated without relying on the general characteristic, if the basis is established, then it is pervasive that it is the real object of verbal designation. 'Other than non-vase' refers to the real vase, while 'appearing as other than non-vase' refers to the general characteristic of the vase. In the direct perception of a vase, the vase and the easily established substance (rdzas, substance) appear as one in all realms (kun yul, all realms), but it is determined by the presence or absence of habituation (goms pa, habituation). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
