It is the basis of the signifier of that which can be cognized by the mind. These three are characteristic, signifier, and basis. This explains it. In the Mind-Only school, the non-deceptive nature of habitual imprints is illustrated by how all appearances of the environment and beings (bhājana-loka and sattva-loka), like dream experiences, are merely diverse manifestations of consciousness (ālayavijñāna), lacking any true external reality. Considering this, it is difficult for ordinary sentient beings to avoid being misled by fundamental delusions. Therefore, from this perspective, whatever appears is considered non-deceptive within this system. Apart from this, immediate delusions are primarily misleading, thus deceptive consciousness (bhrāntijñāna) is considered deceptive. When yogic direct perception (yogipratyakṣa) directly sees the true meaning of its own object, if the mind is placed together on its object, it remains as desired. No matter where the focus is directed, it can be used as one wishes without any obstruction. This special concentration (samādhi) is calm abiding (śamatha). Based on this, the wisdom aspect (prajñā) that clearly and distinctly differentiates the true meaning of the object is insight (vipaśyanā). The knowledge that arises from the combination of calm abiding and insight (śamatha-vipaśyanā-yuganaddha) is called yogic direct perception.

Those who deny that direct perception (pratyakṣa) can cognize real objects do so because they believe that even when an ārya directly sees the truth, only the fourteen real aspects of the four noble truths, such as impermanence and suffering of the truth of suffering, are directly cognized. The aspects of non-reality are inferred by the force of this direct cognition. Only the realization of the two selflessnesses (selflessness of person and selflessness of phenomena) is necessary, because only then can they become objects cognized by direct perception. According to the Sautrāntika school, the samāhita (concentration) of an ārya directly realizes the real aspects of the four noble truths, while the unreal aspects are realized indirectly. Other lower schools, such as the Vaibhāṣika, Sautrāntika, and Cittamatra, although similar in that the way their respective tenets of reality and the nature of selflessness and emptiness are manifested without obscuration, the understanding of gross and subtle selflessness differs due to the differences in the height of the tenets, and the way of recognition appropriate to each school also differs, and in that respect, there are good and bad aspects to the tenets. Those Sautrāntikas who assert self-awareness (sva-saṃvedana), because they assert external objects, if self-awareness and oneself are of the same nature, then the consciousness that cognizes others must be real. Therefore, it is sufficient to have only the object that has become the nature of self-awareness. In the view of the Cittamatra school, generally, external objects are not asserted, and it is only the same nature as consciousness. Whether that consciousness is real or not depends on the situation. Therefore, in that view, self-awareness must be specifically stated as the consciousness of one's own object. Whether it is the Sautrāntika or Cittamatra school, when self-awareness cognizes itself, due to the fact that there is no difference between the object of cognition and the cognizer, it seems that there is no dualistic appearance of subject and object, which is the same. For example, an illusory horse, in the view of those who assert self-awareness, is established by the subsequent ascertainment caused by the determination of 'not a real horse' in the mindstream of the magician, and the ascertainment caused by the self-awareness that experiences 'not a real horse'. For those who do not assert self-awareness, it is necessary to rely on the direct perception of space and other objects at that time, and the ascertainment caused by it, to establish the illusory horse. In any case, the nature of the illusory horse is said to be false and unreal, which is the same. Therefore, the way of establishing it also needs to be something that ascertains that the object itself is false. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
