When referring to 'sound is impermanent,' the sound that is the subject of discussion can be distinguished from general impermanence as merely the impermanence of sound. Because sound is unique, from the aspect of sound being a characteristic, it is a dharma. Such a characteristic has nothing other than sound, so it is 'other-exclusion.' In this case, the general impermanence and the impermanence of sound must appear simultaneously as the attribute and its respective referent, and sound must appear as the attribute. When saying 'sound is impermanent,' 'the impermanence of sound,' the word 'sound' is, in relation to the basis, both a word expressing a subject (something possessing a quality) and a word expressing a dharma. Therefore, such a word 'sound' in the context, is a word that indicates both the attribute and the nature of the sound that is the subject of discussion. If, in relation to the basis, it is a word expressing a subject, then it does not fully express the dharma, such as 'sound is impermanent'; if it is not, it also does not fully express it, such as 'sound is impermanent,' 'the impermanence of sound.' If, in relation to the basis, it is a word expressing the dharma, then it does not fully express the subject, such as 'the impermanence of sound'; if it is not, it also does not fully express it, such as 'sound' and 'the impermanence of sound.' If such a double predication is not established, then generally there are only expressions of subject and dharma. For example, saying 'sound is impermanent' is acceptable, but in relation to the basis, it is not acceptable to establish both subject and dharma. Therefore, the expressions of subject and dharma are not contradictory on the surface, but if they are both, then they are not contradictory, because if, in relation to the basis of sound, both the expressions of subject and dharma are established, then the double predication will be cut off, and the possibility of both being established does not exist. On the 'sound' in the phrase 'sound is impermanent,' it is necessary to distinguish between the aspect of the word expressing the basis as an attribute, and the aspect of the word expressing the basis in relation to the subject. The former is the definition, and the latter is the defined object. The phrase 'sound is impermanent' is an example of a definition. Similarly, on the 'sound' in the phrase 'the impermanence of sound,' it is necessary to distinguish between the aspect of the word indicating the basis as a characteristic, and the aspect of the word expressing the basis in relation to the dharma. The former is the definition, and the latter is the defined object. The phrase 'the impermanence of sound' is an example of a definition. It is necessary to examine whether they are interdependent from the perspective of the defined object, and it is necessary to determine whether to establish double or single predication from the perspective of the definition. In general, the expressions of subject and dharma are not contradictory. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5-443 Although it is pervasive, with respect to that basis, the two terms, 'expression' and 'expressed phenomenon,' if posited together, are not contradictory; if separated, they are contradictory. For the cognition that grasps a pot (bumbhadhāraṇa-jñāna), the aspect of seeing the essence of the pot, the object, through its own power or from its own side, is the primary mind (citta); the aspects of the pot's distinctions, such as beauty or ugliness, appearing distinctly through its own power or from its own side, are mental factors (caitta). Since the cognition that grasps a pot generally sees both the essence and the distinctions of the object, and there is no unseen aspect, both the primary mind and the accompanying mental factors each have an aspect of seeing the essence and distinctions of the object, thus the manner of appearance differs through self-power and assisting power. When 'bloated belly' is first associated with the name of a pot, in the subsequent instances of using the name, the signifier (vācaka) and signified (vācya) of the pot are the same. Through the application of the pot's designation, it repeatedly appears before the conceptual mind, and thus the conceptual mind enters into the meaning of the pot. Therefore, the meaning at the time of designation and the name at the time of expression are connected. When the conceptual thought that grasps a pot holds 'it is a pot,' the object, the pot, appears as coarse and having parts, and the pot's belly, neck, etc., appear as parts different from the general characteristic (sāmānya-lakṣaṇa) of the pot. From this perspective, the conceptual thought is said to appear as coarse, part, and having parts. If it is conceptual thought, then from the aspect of its object appearing as a general object, there is none that is not a mistaken cognition (bhrānta-jñāna). If it is conceptual thought, it cannot arise from the actual power of its object, but only from the effort of recalling inner terms, therefore it is meaningless (anartha). 5-444 The first moment of the eye-consciousness that grasps a pot, from the aspect of being a non-deceptive fresh cognition (abhisaṃplava-jñāna) of the object, is a valid cognition (pramāṇa). The second moment of the eye-consciousness that grasps a pot, from the aspect of being a previously cognized object being cognized again, is a scrutinizing consciousness (parīkṣā-jñāna). The direct perception (pratyakṣa) led by the eye-consciousness that grasps a pot, although it grasps a pot, the non-grasping-a-pot consciousness is not a direct perception of the eye-consciousness. Furthermore, the direct perception led by it is not produced relying on a reason (hetu), therefore it is not an inference (anumāna). The inference that cognizes sound as impermanent based on the reason of being produced (kṛtakatva), its first moment, from the aspect of being a non-deceptive fresh cognition of the object, is a valid cognition. The second moment of such an inference, from the aspect of being a scrutinizing consciousness that cognizes again what was previously cognized relying on a reason, is a scrutinizing consciousness. The direct perception that is led by such an inference, which merely cognizes and ascertains that sound is impermanent, is not an inference because it is not produced relying on a reason. That is how it is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
