Since this ascertainment is conceptual, it cannot be direct perception. Such ascertainment may be an analytic cognition because it re-cognizes what has already been cognized by inference. Therefore, the prior and subsequent moments of the object of direct perception are direct valid cognition and analytic cognition, respectively. The prior and subsequent moments of the object of inference are inferential valid cognition and analytic cognition, respectively. The two ascertainments produced by direct perception and inference are conceptual, so they are not direct perception, and they are not produced from a sign, so they are not inference. In any case, the two ascertainments are similar in that they re-cognize something that has already been cognized, so in general, they are neither direct perception nor inference, but they are also the basis for analytic cognition. Conceptual ascertainment produced by direct perception and inference can be posited. Since each direct perception and inference has its own particular, such as sound is impermanent, and universal, such as the sign of being unmade indicates that space is permanent, it is not certain that the two can be separated merely by the object. 5-445 Direct perception and inference are two valid cognitions, neither three aggregates nor three aggregates that are not two. To dispel the wrong views of some outsiders who believe that there are no valid cognitions at all, and others who believe that there are more than two valid cognitions, it is explicitly stated here that the number of valid cognitions is two. The appearing object of a vase is the meaning-universal of a vase. The object of the apprehension of the concept apprehending a vase is a vase. I myself am established as a self-sufficient substance, even though the self of I (Tibetan: ང་, Sanskrit Devanagari: अहम्, Sanskrit Romanization: aham, Chinese literal meaning: I) is not established, but the mere appearance of I, which is neither the basis of karma and its results nor the collection of the five aggregates, but appears on top of the collection of the five aggregates, is a non-associated formation. Non-associated must appear on top of direction, time, continuity, and collection. In general, saying that a concept has a self-object that agrees with the meaning does not mean that the goal, appearing object, etc., of that concept should be understood separately, but when the way of holding its object is consistent, the general aspect that is needed at that time is mainly grasped, and only in this way is the untrue aspect posited as the object held here because of need, and it can also be considered that there is an object in terms of these aspects. Conceptual knowledge refers to those kinds of knowledge that strongly believe that the sound-universal and the meaning-universal are actually mixed together, or that these two universals can be mixed in any order. This kind of mixed knowledge is what is meant by 'concept' here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
