From the perspective of not understanding any 'is-exclusion,' it must be understood that here, the direct understanding of 'non-existence exclusion' is considered to lack indirect understanding. For example, through the inference of understanding 'sound is impermanent,' the assumption of 'sound is permanent' is directly refuted by the emergence of the general concept of 'sound is impermanent.' Even if the emptiness general concept of 'sound is permanent' does not arise, the non-emptiness assumption of 'sound is permanent' is indirectly refuted. Through this method, one must compare how direct and indirect understanding refute assumptions with other situations. In general, any consciousness, as long as its respective objects appear and are understood, falls under the category of direct understanding; even if its respective objects do not appear, but are understood incidentally in meaning, it falls under the category of indirect understanding. In general, all cognitions are mistaken in terms of the appearing object, general concept, and meaning appearance. Sound cognitions distinguish the respective objects of expression, objects of attachment, and objects to be established through three aspects—the expresser, the expressed, and the established—therefore, they are exclusion and introduction. The Sutra School and Mind-Only School have three views on how consciousness arises: Due to the lack of diversity and duality, consciousness with multiple characteristics is considered part of a single whole, with each consciousness arising to grasp objects such as blue, yellow, etc. Like the analogy of 'half an egg,' a consciousness grasping an object with multiple characteristics is considered to arise in the form of a single blue object. Because the number of grasped and grasper are equal, many different consciousnesses, such as grasping blue, yellow, etc., are considered to arise separately in the form of many blue, yellow, etc., objects. In general, if the knowable is a general concept that follows the shape of a vase, then it must be considered dependent on the general concept of a kind. A vase is only a collection of vase shapes, not a true general concept, so it must be understood from this sense that it is not a general concept of a kind. If it is said to be an expressive word, then it is not necessarily speech, because the sound emitted by the heavenly drum proclaims the Four Seals of Dharma, and from the perspective of proclaiming the Dharma, it is expressive, but since it does not originate from a person's tongue, it is not speech. For example, in the view of the Vaibhashika School, for ordinary individuals such as an old dog or an Indian, if they have the opportunity to practice Dharma in the future, then wisdom of the path will gradually arise in their continuum, thereby eliminating their respective obscurations and attaining cessation. When one thinks that cessation might appear in the continuum of the old dog now, this is called the cessation that will be attained.

According to the Sautrāntika school, due to the difference in the experience of objects, the way of experiencing through manifestation, the object of cognition is limited to the manifestation of knowledge itself. If this is the case, external objects will not appear. If the object cognized through the way of experiencing manifestation is defined as the characteristic of manifestation, then pillars, vases, etc., will also not be manifestations. Therefore, from the perspective of this school, this is unreasonable. Even though virtuous actions will definitely produce Vipāka (result of action), there are possibilities of producing or not producing Vipāka. Sound, consciousness, faculties, individuals, etc., generally exist as objects and relative objects. Generally speaking, the exclusion of other from self-characterization refers to a non-affirming negation, such as 'a vase is impermanent,' which is both a thing and a reality. This is the negation that becomes a thing. It can also be the exclusion of other of that dharma. Based on 'a vase that is not unconditioned is impermanent' being the exclusion of other from self-characterization, the impermanence of the vase can exist in a way that is different from itself and its opposite. It is the self-characterization of that dharma, which is both a self-characterized thing and a negation. The conceptual exclusion of other of the general meaning of 'a vase that is not unconditioned is impermanent,' and 'there is no vase that is not unconditioned and is impermanent,' this is the exclusion of other of the non-affirming negation of a vase that is not unconditioned and is impermanent. Regarding the meaning of whether to exclude or not exclude others, for example, when saying 'sound is impermanent,' the word 'sound' does not directly determine that on the basis of sound, there are other characteristics besides impermanence, such as base, establishment, etc., therefore it is not excluding others. When saying 'the impermanence of sound,' the word 'sound' is a dharma that can distinguish sound as a difference, and it directly determines that there are others besides impermanence, therefore it is a word that excludes others. If it is a name, it is not necessarily a word, such as the word 'vase.' If it is not a name, it is not universal, such as the word 'a vase is impermanent.' It is both a letter and a name, such as the word 'ba.' It is only a letter and not a name, such as the letter 'pa' in the sound of the word 'vase'. If it is a thing, it must be a cause, because everything that is a thing has no non-cause. This can be explained. If it is a thing, it is not necessarily a form, because consciousness is a thing, but it is not a form. This can be explained. The way in which the meaning is the same here is: whatever dharma, if it is mutually pervasive and equal, that is the meaning of the same meaning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
