Realizers: Vasubandhu (author of the Treasury of Knowledge and its Auto-commentary), Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, etc. The second includes the Buddha's teachings (Kama) and treatises (Tantras). The first is: The Extensive Play Sutra (Lalitavistara Sūtra), the Two-Verse Sutra, the Four-Verse Sutra, the Six-Door Dharani, etc. The second is: most of the direct teachings of the Treasury of Knowledge and its Auto-commentary and the Explanation of Valid Cognition. The third is: Which Buddhist, following many sutras of the Bhagavan, establishes his own system? That person who asserts the tenet established from the perspective of accepting both self-awareness and external objects as truly existent is the characteristic of a Sautrāntika. The fourth has two divisions: classification and etymology. The first is: If divided in terms of essence, there are two types of Sautrāntikas: those who follow the scriptures, following the five Vinaya divisions, and those who follow reasoning, following the seven treatises on valid cognition. If divided in terms of aspects, some Sautrāntikas who follow the scriptures have 'manifold sequential arising,' and the Sautrāntikas who follow reasoning have 'manifold non-duality,' and 'equal number of grasper and grasped.' The second is: In general, when a variegated-apprehending consciousness apprehends a variegated object, it is called 'manifold sequential arising' because it is asserted that each aspect of the object-possessing consciousness, equal in number to the blue, yellow, etc., on the variegated object, arises sequentially. Also, it is called 'manifold non-duality' because it is asserted that when apprehending in that way, instead of each aspect of the object-possessing consciousness, equal in number to the blue, yellow, etc., on the variegated object, arising, only a single variegated-apprehending consciousness arises, possessing the aspect of the various parts of the variegated object appearing. Also, it is called 'equal number of grasper and grasped' because it is asserted that when apprehending in that way, each aspect of the object-possessing consciousness, equal in number to the blue, yellow, etc., on the variegated object, arises simultaneously. Because they mainly rely on the sutras to assert their own tenets, they are called Sautrāntikas, and because they show all phenomena through examples, they are also called 'Exemplifiers'. The fifth mainly explains the tenets of the Sautrāntikas who follow reasoning. This includes: the establishment of the two truths, the three of view, meditation, and conduct, the three of basis, path, and result, and four other related topics. The first is the establishment of the two truths, divided into the ultimate truth and the conventional truth. The first is the ultimate truth, divided into the nature of the ultimate truth and the explanation of its own characteristic. The first is the nature of the ultimate truth: it is not merely imputed by conceptual thought, but is established as being able to withstand analysis by reasoning from the perspective of its own mode of existence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
