Collected Teachings of Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD44: 'A Good Ornament for the Mind of the Wise: A Summary of the Tenets of Inner and Outer Schools' 5-4 A Good Ornament for the Mind of the Wise: A Summary of the Tenets of Inner and Outer Schools A Good Ornament for the Mind of the Wise: A Summary of the Tenets of Inner and Outer Schools Homage to the all-knowing Yeshe Dawa (Skt: Jñāna Candra, Wisdom Moon), In the vast expanse of the wheel of knowable objects, The splendor of the images of good and bad stars shining forth, May the one who possesses the wisdom to clarify everything at once be victorious! Completely fathoming the profound intent of the Sage, A friend who opens the good path to the view of definitive meaning, May the brothers Asanga (Skt: Asaṅga) and Vasubandhu, And all the great chariot masters, be honored with the crown of my head! In this land of Tibet, with the supreme path of truth, Clarifying the essence of the definitive meaning, The incarnate form possessing the four reliances, I respectfully bow to the lineage of fathers and sons! Possessing a mind of vast wisdom, a treasure of great compassion, A protector with unparalleled great deeds, 5-5 And skillfully teaching me the ways of liberation, May the kindness of the gracious lama always protect me! In order to clarify the difference between the right path and the wrong path, A brief description of the tenets of inner and outer schools, With the intention of benefiting some beginners, I have compiled a small portion from the words of the holy ones. Therefore, here, to distinguish the principles of one's own and others' tenets, first, those who do not rely on reasoned arguments but only seek the happiness of this life are not considered to be within the scope of tenets. Those who study scriptures and explain the principles of the basis, path, and result through the reasoning of scriptures are considered to be within the scope of tenets. Establishing one's own accepted tenets through scriptural reasoning, and having an ultimate assertion that is not altered by other scriptural reasoning, can be called a tenet. Proponents of tenets can be divided into two categories: inner and outer. First, the outer schools can be divided into characteristics and divisions. The characteristic is: not taking refuge in the Three Jewels, considering Ishvara (Shiva) etc. as gods, and accepting any of the four extremes such as permanence or annihilation, is the characteristic of an outsider. For example: like the sage Kapila (Skt: Kapila). Second, the divisions include: Lokayata, Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Nirgrantha, and Ajivika. The first, Lokayata, includes: identifying the root teacher, explaining the scriptures that demonstrate the assertions, 5-6 classifying the names, explaining the meanings of the words, and elaborating on the differences in their assertions.

Fifth Section: First: Such as the sage Owl, Gzex Zan, Foot-eye, etc. Second: Such as the 'Power Uttering Sound' Tantra and the 'Stacked Mewa' Tantra, etc. Third: Such as the Ishvara (自在天), Vaisheshika (胜论派), Shanti (寂静者), Eternalist, Intelligent One, Foot-eye, etc. Fourth: Because they speak extensively about the differences between generalities and particulars, they are called Vaisheshika (胜论派); and because they follow the rational views established by the sage Foot-eye, they are called 'Intelligent Ones'. Fifth: Although there are slight differences in the views of these two schools (Vaisheshika and the 'Intelligent Ones'), there are no differences in the general principles. Therefore, both schools generally agree that all phenomena are included within nine substances. These nine substances are: the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind; and space, self, mind, direction, and time. Among these, space, self, direction, and time are the permanent substances that accompany all phenomena, while the remainder are impermanent substances that do not accompany them in this way. They believe that atoms are permanent, while gross matter is impermanent. The six meanings of words are: substance and quality (गुण,梵文:guṇa, गुण,guna, गुण,性质或属性), action (कर्म,梵文:karma, कर्म,karma, कर्म,业) and inherence (समवाय,梵文:samavāya, समवाय,samavaya, समवाय,结合或联系), generality and particularity. They accept bathing, empowerment, fasting, etc., as paths to liberation. They believe that when one relies on the oral instructions of a guru and spontaneously understands the self-nature that pervades all beings without any effort, and no longer accumulates new karma (कर्म,梵文:karma, कर्म,karma, कर्म,业), and all old karma (कर्म,梵文:karma, कर्म,karma, कर्म,业) is exhausted, like a fire that goes out when the wood is consumed, the cycle of rebirth is cut off, and one becomes solely the self, then liberation (मुक्ति,梵文:mukti, मुक्ति,mukti, मुक्ति,解脱) is attained. The second part includes five aspects: identifying the root teacher, explaining the scriptures that express desires, the classification of names, etymological explanations, and explaining the differences in their views. First: Such as the sage Kapila (कपिल,梵文:Kapila, कपिल,kapila, कपिल,迦毗罗), the worthy of offerings, the great Ishvara (自在天), the teacher Chu Kung, etc. Second: Such as the 'Black Ishvara' Tantra, the 'Thirty' Treatise, the 'Golden Seventy' Treatise, etc. Third: Such as the Samkhya (数论派), Kapila (कपिल,梵文:Kapila, कपिल,kapila, कपिल,迦毗罗) school, Pradhana (主物派), those with knowledge (ज्ञान,梵文:jñāna, ज्ञान,jnana, ज्ञान,知识), those with three qualities (गुण,梵文:guṇa, गुण,guna, गुण,性质或属性), etc. Fourth: Because they believe that all knowable phenomena are included within twenty-five tattvas (तत्त्व,梵文:tattva, तत्त्व,tattva, तत्त्व,真实或原理), they are called Samkhya (数论派). Fifth: According to this system, the twenty-five knowables are: nature (Prakriti) as the primary substance, Mahat (महत्,梵文:mahat, महत्,mahat, महत्,大), which is intellect (buddhi,बुद्धि,梵文:buddhi, बुद्धि,buddhi, बुद्धि,智力), ego (ahaṃkāra,अहंकार,梵文:ahaṃkāra, अहंकार,ahamkara, अहंकार,我慢) these three, and the five subtle elements of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, the five great elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, the five active sense organs (karmendriya,कर्मेन्द्रिय,梵文:karmendriya, कर्मेन्द्रिय,karmendriya, कर्मेन्द्रिय,行动根) of speech, hands, feet, genitals, and anus, the five sense organs of eyes, ears, nose, tongue --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
