Among the Hīnayāna and Mahāyāna schools, Firstly, among the Sarvāstivāda and Sautrāntika schools, Firstly, there are five aspects: identifying the root teacher, the tenets they wish to expound, the characteristics, the divisions and etymology, and the distinctions of their tenets. First, there are Venerable Dharmatrāta, Master Vasumitra, Venerable Ghoṣa, Master Buddadeva, Venerable Me’u thung, and Master Vasubandhu at the time of composing the root verses of the Abhidharmakośa. Secondly, among the Buddha's words (bka') and treatises (bstan bcos), the former includes the Kātyāyana-sūtra, the 'Hundred Instructions' (Gadaṁs-ngag brgya-ba), the 'Seven Treatises on Abhidharma' (Abhidharma-sapta-prakaraṇa), etc.; the latter includes most of the root verses of the Abhidharmakośa. Thirdly, a Buddhist who establishes his own system in accordance with the Mahāvibhāṣa and other texts, who does not accept self-awareness (rang rig), and who, in terms of accepting the true existence of external objects, is a proponent of philosophical tenets, is defined as a Sarvāstivādin. Fourthly, the divisions and etymology are: the Sarvāstivāda school has three types: the Kashmirian (kha che pa) Sarvāstivāda, the Western (nyi 'og pa) Sarvāstivāda, and the Central (yul dbus) Sarvāstivāda. Because they assert the distinctions of substances in the three times, they are called Sarvāstivādins. Fifthly, among the five categories of knowable objects, the classification of the two truths, other related meanings, the three aspects of view, meditation, and conduct, and the three aspects of ground, path, and result, firstly, among the five categories of form, mind, mental factors, non-associated compositional factors, and unconditioned elements: Firstly, within form, there are forms that are indicative and obstructive, such as pillars and vases; forms that are non-indicative but obstructive, such as the five sense faculties and the four objects of sound, smell, taste, and touch; and forms that are non-indicative and non-obstructive, such as non-revealing forms. Some assert that even finer than this are indivisible atoms, placing one atom in the center and having ten atoms surround it from all directions, yet they maintain that there is empty space between them where they do not touch each other. If it is an aggregate, then it must be composed of the four great elements. For example, water's ability to support boats is the function of earth, the rolling of leaves is the function of fire, and downward movement is the function of wind. Similarly, each element is believed to possess the functions of all four elements. Secondly, the six consciousnesses that directly perceive the nature of objects through their own power. When they apprehend their respective objects, they do not generate the nature of possessing the object's appearance, but rather apprehend them through direct contact without appearance. Moreover, if the eye consciousness alone sees form, then it should be able to see forms that are obstructed by mountains, but since this is not the case, the eye consciousness is a sense faculty. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, they acknowledge that form is visible. Third: The mental factors such as the five omnipresent ones, which apprehend the distinctions of objects. Regarding these mental factors, according to the tenets of the higher schools, a brief summary is: Feeling, discrimination, intention, contact, and attention. These are the five omnipresent ones. Aspiration, conviction, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom. These are the five object-determining ones. Faith, conscientiousness, tranquility, equanimity, shame, embarrassment, non-attachment, non-hatred, non-ignorance, non-harmfulness, and diligence. These are the eleven virtuous ones. Attachment, anger, pride, ignorance, doubt, and views. These six are the root afflictions. Wrath, resentment, concealment, vexation, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, slyness, arrogance, harmfulness, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, lethargy, excitement, disbelief, laziness, recklessness, forgetfulness, non-alertness, and distraction. These are the twenty secondary afflictions. Sleep, regret, investigation, and analysis. These are the four variable ones. Fourth: Attainment, absorption, aggregates of names, aggregates of sentences, aggregates of letters, birth, aging, abiding, disintegration, person (Pudgala), connection, sequence, number, etc. They consider these to be substantially existent in their own right, independent of their respective bases of designation. Fifth: According to the common view of the Sarvāstivāda, space, cessation through discrimination, and cessation without discrimination, these three, and according to the Lokāyata, in addition to these three, the coarse selflessness of the person, these four are considered to be unconditioned, permanent substances. Among the above mental factors, there are also five types of views. That is, the afflicted wisdom that focuses on the 'I' of one's own continuum, viewing it as an independently existing entity, is the view of the aggregates (satkāya-dṛṣṭi). The afflicted wisdom that views the 'I' that is the object of attachment of the view of the aggregates as being terminated in the next life is the annihilationist view (uccheda-dṛṣṭi). The afflicted wisdom that views such an object of attachment as not being terminated in the next life is the eternalist view (śāśvata-dṛṣṭi). The afflicted wisdom that views these views as the cause of liberation and definite emergence is the view of holding views as supreme (dṛṣṭi-parāmarśa). The afflicted wisdom that views the practice of bad ethics such as worshiping the five fires, and bad asceticism such as the behavior of dogs and cows, as the cause of liberation and definite emergence is the view of holding ethics and asceticism as supreme (śīla-vrata-parāmarśa). The afflicted wisdom that views that there is no cause and effect, etc., is the wrong view (mithyā-dṛṣṭi), which is the combination of the above eternalist and annihilationist views, making a total of five. Secondly, there are two truths: conventional truth and ultimate truth. First, conventional truth: When the Buddha or individual parts are disassembled, the mind that grasps at self is abandoned. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
