‘All-knowingness (thams cad shes pa nyid)’ etc., it is stated that the phenomena encompassed by the aggregates and elements are the basis in the sense that they are the support of specific characteristics. As stated in the Sutra of Abhidharma: ‘The realm of beginningless time (thog ma med pa dus kyi khams)’ etc., the meaning of which is explained in the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, the Alaya-vijñana (kun gzhi'i rnam shes) is the basis in the sense that it is the foundation for all virtuous and non-virtuous imprints. As stated in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: ‘The discriminator of verbal distinctions, the basis for acting according to desire (brda yi bye brag rtog pa po, 'dod pa'i rjes su byed pa'i gzhi)’ etc., it is stated that phenomena are the basis in the sense that they are objects expressed by words. Furthermore, the root from which branches emerge is called the basis, and the source of differentiation is called the basis, and so on. Second, regarding the identification of the ultimate basis: Showing that this basis exists in all self and others; Showing that it is the basis of all samsara and nirvana; Showing that this basis, the Tathagatagarbha (bde gshegs snying po), possesses nine qualities. First: The Dharmadhatu (chos dbyings) of ultimate reality has never been stained by any faults from the beginning, and all ultimate qualities have been naturally perfected from the beginning, this self-arisen co-emergent wisdom (rang byung lhan cig skyes pa'i ye shes), the naturally luminous Tathagatagarbha (bde gshegs snying po), pervades the minds of all sentient beings. Second, divided into sutra and shastra. First, in the Tathagatagarbha Sutra it is said: ‘Sons of the lineage, similarly, beneath the mind of manifest clinging of all sentient beings, which has become like a house, there is the Tathagatagarbha (de bzhin gshegs pa'i snying po), a great treasure of strength, fearlessness, non-mixture, and all the Buddha-dharmas.’ etc. Furthermore, in the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and the Entering Non-Conceptualization Dharani, etc., in many Mahayana sutras, it is repeatedly stated that the nature of the minds of all sentient beings, within the sheath of adventitious stains, possesses the Dharmakaya (sangs rgyas chos sku) of ultimate reality, complete with all qualities. Second, in the Uttaratantra it is said: ‘Just as in the house of a poor person, under the ground, there is an inexhaustible treasure (ji ltar mi dbul khyim nang sa 'og na, mi zad pa ya yi gter ni yod gyur la).’ etc., explaining in detail that just as there is a treasure under the house of a poor person, similarly, within the minds of all sentient beings, there is a treasure like a jewel of naturally luminous wisdom. Furthermore, in the Yogacarabhumi Shastra, etc., in many Indian treatises composed by Asanga and Vasubandhu, similar views are clearly explained. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding 'Uma', there are scriptural quotations and explanations of how it serves as the basis for both samsara and nirvana. There are two types: the first is scriptural quotations, divided into sutras and treatises. The first is from the Mahayana Dharmadhatu Aviseṣa Sutra: 'The beginningless realm is the basis of all dharmas; because of it, all beings attain nirvana.' etc. The second is from the Uttaratantra: 'The Tathagatagarbha is in the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas; afflictions and karma all depend on it; karma and afflictions are not as they should be; constant attention is paid to it; those who do not pay attention properly rely on the purity of mind.' etc. The second type concerns the two bases of nirvana and samsara: First, the Dharmadhatu itself, in its ultimate truth, is ultimate nirvana. Because by focusing on it and meditating, one can attain nirvana that removes temporary defilements, it is considered a factor in attaining new nirvana, and therefore considered the basis of nirvana. Second, although the Dharmadhatu itself is not the direct cause of samsara, like impurities in gold and turbidity in water, the conventional, temporary samsara also exists in the form of the self-luminous mind and dharma and dharmata through dependent relationships, and is therefore also considered the basis of samsara. Fourth, there are three types of definitions: the definition of exclusion, the definition of distinction, and the common definition. First, in terms of the Tathagatagarbha itself being permanent, stable, peaceful, and eternal, it is considered permanent; in terms of the Tathagatagarbha itself pervading samsara and nirvana, transcending the limitations of time and space, without partiality of near and far, existing as the life and protector of all dharmas, it is considered all-pervading; generally, although there are disagreements regarding Dharmata, with some considering Nagarjuna to be emptiness without negation and Asaṅga considering it to be the Alaya-vijnana, as stated in the Uttaratantra: 'Observe this nature like honey.' and 'Beings have this uncontaminated wisdom, like bees collecting honey.' etc., according to our own tradition, since the self-luminous mind of the two graspers is regarded by the noble ones as the object of their own realization, the Tathagatagarbha itself is considered the object of their own realization; in the Avatamsaka Sutra it says: 'The non-differentiated, inconceivable Buddha-dharma, possessing merits exceeding the sands of the Ganges, is considered the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata.' etc.; and in the Nirvana Sutra it says: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
