If it is a consciousness with an object, then the phenomenon of itself being an erroneous consciousness, which is realized by a conventional valid cognition that has not turned its mind towards suchness, is the definition of false conventional truth in relation to worldly knowledge. Examples include the example of illusion, and the five sense consciousnesses tainted by temporary causes of error. Regarding the second point, there are three parts: definition, etymological explanation, and classification. First, for a valid cognition that investigates ultimate truth, the attainment of that which has become a valid cognition that investigates ultimate truth for itself is the definition of ultimate truth. An example is a vase being empty of inherent existence. Regarding how the wisdom of the Buddhas knows itself, in general, Tibetan scholars have different views, and in particular, Je Yabse (Tsongkhapa and his two main disciples) also have different statements. Je Tsongkhapa said that it is known through the way of appearing, Gyaltsab Je said that it is realized without appearing, and Khedrup Je said that it is known without appearing, but their actual intention is that for all dharmas that are the same entity, easy to establish, and the same substance as oneself, if they are known through the way of appearing, then no other way of knowing is needed. Secondly, like the emptiness of the mind, it is called 'truth' (དོན་,artha, meaning) because it is attained by uncontaminated meditative equipoise; it is called 'supreme' (དམ་པ་,parama, supreme) because appearance and existence are consistent; it is called 'truth' (བདེན་པ་,satya, truth) because it is the correct way of existence. Thirdly, if classified in detail, there are sixteen emptinesses; if classified in medium, there are the emptiness of things and the emptiness of non-things, and the four emptinesses of self-nature and other-nature; if classified briefly, there are the two of the selflessness of phenomena and the selflessness of persons; from the perspective of the way of knowing, there are the two of direct perception and inference; from the perspective of the way of expression, there are the two of object and object-possessor. The third additional point is that, in general, consciousness is divided into valid cognition and non-valid cognition. Valid cognition is further divided into direct perception and inference. Among these, direct perception is further divided into two types: one is with conceptual thought, such as the second moment of inference that realizes that sound is impermanent; the other is without conceptual thought, such as the second moment of the blue-grasping sense direct perception. The definition of valid cognition is a consciousness that does not deceive its object of apprehension. What is valid cognition? The definition of direct perception is a consciousness that does not deceive the measurable manifest object of its apprehension. The Svatantrika school and below believe that there is no yogic direct perception except in the case of the noble path, but this school believes that even on the path of ordinary beings, there is a yogic direct perception that realizes the sixteen aspects of the four truths and the coarse selflessness of persons. For mental direct perception, there is no need for non-conceptual thought; direct perception is sufficient. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They consider that analytical knowledge derived from reasoning and subsequent inference is also acceptable. For the consciousness that experiences inner happiness, etc., it is different from self-awareness because the object of experience and the subject of experience appear to be different. In general, the dharma that needs to be understood by relying on reasoning is the measurable hidden object; and the dharma that can be understood without relying on reasoning is the measurable manifest object. The knowledge that directly relies on reasoning and is not deceptive about its own measurable, slightly hidden object is the characteristic of valid inference. This inference can be divided into four types: self-force, fame, trust, and analogy measurement. In addition, there are two types of inference: one that understands the measurable hidden object by relying only on refutation, and one that understands the measurable hidden object by relying on reasoning that possesses three characteristics. Regarding how the consciousness that cognizes blue proves itself, since the appearance of external objects appears in the consciousness that cognizes blue, the subject of cognition and the object of cognition appear to be different, so it is different from self-awareness. In addition, the memory generated by the root consciousness that cognizes blue is also associated with the remembered blue object, thereby remembering and understanding the object with the nature of blue cognition. Therefore, they do not accept the Alaya consciousness and self-awareness outside of the six consciousnesses. The Svatantrika school does not believe that through its own arguments, it can cause outsiders to generate a view of ultimate truth. They believe that since there is an appearing consciousness, there is also an appearing external object. Both the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the subtle absence of self of phenomena, and universally consider the clinging to the self of phenomena to be afflictive obscurations. Because they believe that things are destructible, their way of establishing the three times is different from the lower schools. Taking a sprout as an example, the destruction of the sprout that has already grown in the second moment is the past time of the sprout; generally speaking, although there is a cause for producing the sprout, the sprout has not grown in that place because of the temporary lack of causes and conditions, this is the future time of the sprout; the sprout that has already grown is growing and has not stopped, this is the present time of the sprout. In general, all schools agree that if it is the present, then it is a thing, but there is a difference as to whether the past and future are things. The second part includes three aspects: view, meditation, and conduct. First is the view, which is the wisdom that realizes the absence of self of persons and the absence of self of phenomena. What the view needs to abandon is the clinging to the self of persons, and the afflictive obscurations including the root afflictions, secondary afflictions, and clinging to reality, as well as the delusion of the appearance of reality and the appearance of duality, and the cognitive obscurations caused by the defilements of contradictory clinging to the two truths. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
