That which, through cultivation, purifies obscurations, but is not the ultimate object, is the characteristic of conventional truth. Its basis is all phenomena encompassed by the two, other-powered and imputed. Secondly, in terms of the divisions of the conventional, there are three: imputed conventional, cognized conventional, and expressed conventional. Thirdly, conventional truth can also be called nominal truth, false, deceptive phenomena, and phenomena where appearance and reality differ, and so on. Fourthly, because it is true on the level of imputed, cognized, and expressed conventionals, it is called conventional truth. The second part includes: characteristic, divisions, names, and etymological explanation. First, the characteristic: that which, by taking self-grasping as the object and cultivating, purifies obscurations and becomes the ultimate object, is the characteristic of ultimate truth. For example, the two selflessnesses. Secondly, the divisions: if divided concisely, there are the two selflessnesses; if divided extensively, there are the sixteen emptinesses, and so on. Among these, the sixteen emptinesses are: the external sense bases (referring to the six sense faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind), each phenomenon is empty because its name is established by its own characteristic, this is called external emptiness; similarly, the internal sense bases (referring to the six sense objects of form, sound, smell, taste, touch, and phenomena) and internal emptiness; the support between internal and external and internal-external emptiness; the imputed is empty because it is established by its own characteristic, this is called emptiness of emptiness; the ten directions and the emptiness of the great; emptiness is established in the ultimate way, this itself and ultimate emptiness; conditioned phenomena and emptiness of conditioned phenomena; unconditioned phenomena and emptiness of unconditioned phenomena; in samsara, the constant extreme with a beginning and the annihilationist extreme without an end, and samsara itself existing between the two, because its name is established by its own characteristic, is the middle extreme, therefore surpassing such three extremes, this itself and emptiness of surpassing extremes; samsara has no beginning and no end, this itself and emptiness of no beginning and no end; the Mahayana path is never abandoned, this itself and emptiness of non-abandonment; the reality of phenomena, suchness, without a maker such as Ishvara, is empty from the beginning because it is naturally established, this itself and emptiness of nature; all phenomena from form to omniscience and emptiness of all phenomena; the characteristics of phenomena and emptiness of self-characteristic; the three times have no simultaneous object, this itself and emptiness of non-object; phenomena, in the object of grasping at self in conceptual thought, have no entity established by its own characteristic, but are the object of grasping at self in conceptual thought --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Third, emptiness (Śūnyatā, the nature of all dharmas is without self-nature), Dharmadhatu (Dharmadhātu, the essence of all dharmas), Pariniṣpanna (Pariniṣpanna, ultimate accomplishment), Paramārthasatya (Paramārthasatya, the highest truth), Bhūtatathatā (Bhūtatathatā, the real limit), and Suchness (Tathatā, the real state of things). Fourth, because it is empty of the Dharma-self to be refuted, it is emptiness; because it is the cause of the Dharma of the noble ones, it is Dharmadhatu; because it is completely accomplished in the ultimate state, it is Pariniṣpanna; because it is the object of the Samadhi of the noble ones, it is Paramārthasatya; because it is the non-inverted object, it is Bhūtatathatā; because it is constantly unchanging, it is called Suchness. Therefore, the two truths are considered to be one in essence but different in aspects. Second, it is divided into three types: Parikalpita (imaginary, imputation), Paratantra (dependent origination), and Pariniṣpanna (perfected nature). First, Parikalpita is divided into three types: nature, etymology, and classification. First, the aspect of imputation by sound and concept or any kind of name on any basis is the nature of Parikalpita. For example, knowable objects and the two selves. Second, because it is not established by its own nature, but is only established by name, it is called 'without self-nature'; because it is only the aspect of being imputed by concept, it is called 'Parikalpita'. Third, there are two types: Parikalpita of nominal categories such as knowable objects, and Parikalpita whose nature is completely cut off, such as the self of a person. Second, it is divided into three types: nature, etymology, and classification. First, the object that arises from other causes and conditions is the nature of Paratantra. For example, the eight aggregates of consciousness. Second, because it cannot stay for even a moment after arising, it is called Paratantra; because it arises from causes and conditions, but does not arise independently, it is called 'without self-nature of arising'. Third, there are two types: pure Paratantra such as the non-conceptual wisdom and signs of the noble ones, and impure Paratantra such as the aggregates of defilement and contaminated aggregates. Third, it is divided into three types: nature, etymology, and classification. First, the suchness of emptiness, as if imputed by the clinging to self and duality, is the nature of Pariniṣpanna. For example, the nature of Dharma. Second, because it is the ultimate object of the pure path that does not change in other ways, it is called Pariniṣpanna; because in its ultimate nature, there is no nature of the Dharma-self to be refuted, it is called 'ultimate without self-nature'. Third, there is the non-inverted Pariniṣpanna, such as the Samadhi of the noble ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
