Suffering is more and coarser than before, and various adverse conditions, obstacles, and disharmonious events arise. This means that negative karma and defilements that were dormant are awakened through practice. As a sign of awakening, physical illnesses arise, and mental suffering and coarser thoughts occur more than before. All external adverse conditions, obstacles, and disharmonious factors are aroused. Internal imbalances of elements, heart ailments, wind disorders, and so on all arise. For example, it is like adding alkali when washing away dirt, which stirs up the dirt. Doubts arise about cause and effect, instructions, and virtuous friends. Fear arises from adversity, and weariness arises from the Dharma of the path. This means that after practicing, not understanding the signs of awakened negative karma, adverse conditions increase after practicing Dharma. Illness and suffering increase, hostility arises between people, loving-kindness decreases, and suffering increases. Originally, practicing Dharma should improve things, but after practicing Dharma, things worsen, and the more one strives for virtue, the more suffering increases. Others who commit evil seem to have happiness, and one feels that cause and effect are not true. One doubts the lama who teaches instructions, the Dharma he teaches, and everything said in the instructions. After practicing, the more one strives for virtue, the more disharmonious factors increase, and one feels that one cannot continue. Thus, one doubts cause and effect, develops wrong views about the lama and instructions, and becomes weary of the obstacles on the path. This is because one does not understand the meaning of the exhaustion of virtue and the exhaustion of evil. It is a failure to recognize the signs of awakening, which is the cause of the arising of demons. The sutra says: "For those newly entering the Great Vehicle, beings with small minds, who have not found this precious jewel, demons will rejoice in order to obstruct them." Why does this non-existent, appearing demon harm me? This unreal, illusory enemy is destroyed by the antidote of the mind. This means that one should not be happy about or attached to gain, fame, reputation, praise, respect, faith, offerings, and being held in high esteem, and so on. Because temporary happiness and fleeting pleasures are merely worldly enjoyments, one must abandon everything and leave at the time of death. No one remains forever. Attachment and clinging to these things obstruct liberation and are the cause of samsara.

It causes (bad karma). Relying on it, others gain a lot, and one's own merit is greatly depleted. Because of hating the opposite and inconsistent aspects of those (virtuous deeds), it turns into attachment and aversion. Even if there are pleasant names like obscurations, merits will not arise. The *Bodhicharyavatara* says, "Having obtained many possessions, And having enjoyed them for a long time, Just like being robbed by thieves, One goes naked with empty hands." Therefore, all the happiness in the world is a deceptive appearance, a trick of the mind, the pinnacle of illusion, just the happiness of a single sleep. All times are without reliance, unreal, non-existent, empty. To be attached to it is foolish of ourselves. The *Letter to a Friend* says, "O wise one, gain and loss, pleasant and unpleasant, fame and infamy, praise and blame, these eight worldly dharmas, Please treat them equally, do not let them become the object of my mind." It is like that. Rather than cutting off whether ghosts exist or not, it is more meaningful to cut off the attachment and aversion, the eight worldly dharmas that actually arise. Even if there is no thought of clinging to ghosts in the mind, if one denies the existence of ghosts, one will fall into a transgression that contradicts the means. Even if one realizes that there is no good or evil, one should not deny cause and effect, but should adopt and abandon in a state of unreality. Even while adopting and abandoning, one should not have attachment or aversion. Whatever appears, decide that it is the mind, and during the practice, do not think of good or evil, existence or non-existence, right or wrong, samsara or nirvana, but remain naturally relaxed. Let go of clinging, let go completely, and abandon without hesitation. For things that are difficult to balance and difficult to introduce to the path, one must balance them through repeated practice. Transform (the negative) into (the positive), transform (the difficult) into (the easy), and practice by superimposing and combining. If one can completely cut off the afflictions of samsara—the demons of attachment and aversion, one can open the source of all happiness, the treasure of all merits. That is to say, the standard for completely cutting off the demons of abandonment and adoption mentioned earlier is: there should be no difference even for a moment between liking and disliking, good and bad in the world, therefore there is no need to abandon and adopt, and there is no need to negate and affirm. The eight worldly dharmas of attachment and aversion naturally subside, and are harmed by the causes of the six objects of the senses, and even when in a crowd, one is not contaminated by external attachment and aversion, just like putting dust and mercury together.
