Nor does one go to impure places. Therefore, avoidance and mixing are not established by conceptual thought, and there is no difference in meaning whatsoever. In this way, the heads of many conceptual thoughts and attachment and aversion are subdued, and the realization of the nature of reality arises spontaneously. In the Collection of Sayings, it says: "Adverse circumstances are taken as a burden. It is precious to overcome adverse circumstances. If all dharmas are not taken as a burden, one cannot be liberated by the antidote of peace." Thus it is said. Cutting off happiness and suffering with the eight worldly dharmas means that it is more important to cut off the demon of conceptual thought that harms the inner mind than to cut off the demon that harms the outer body. As it says in the Practice Dharma: "If you put ghosts and demons inside and try to cut off the outer demons, it will not work." Therefore, there are three aspects to this: what adverse conditions to cut off, with what antidote to cut off, and what benefits arise from cutting off. The first is all the things that are to be abandoned in the world, such as not finding, being unpleasant, not being famous, being slandered, being accused, the clamor of people, spreading bad words, little faith, no respect, being underestimated, little respect, unjust accusations, being despised by everyone, being uncomfortable, and being unhappy. With what antidote to cut off? There are three aspects to this: practice it as a path and do not blame others; eliminate sins and obscurations and do not see it as something to be abandoned; because it is cause and effect, do not cultivate wrong thoughts. The first is that no matter what unpleasant adverse conditions arise in the mind, it is a sign that one has accumulated bad karma from experiencing adverse conditions in the past and has not accumulated the cause of experiencing favorable conditions. Because anything that is not karma will not fall upon you, and karma will never be wasted. Do not retaliate, fight, argue, or blame others. The sutra says: "The karmas of sentient beings will not be wasted even after hundreds of eons. When they gather and the time comes, they will ripen as fruit." Eliminating sins and obscurations and not seeing it as something to be abandoned means that the unfavorable adverse conditions encountered in this life, and the suffering experienced by body, speech, and mind, all eliminate the karma that will cause one to be reborn in the lower realms in the future, so one should be happy, see it as necessary, see it as a great kindness, and see it as inevitable. Therefore, in the practice of Dharma, whether it is fatigue, heat or cold, drinking water, picking up stones, or staying in one place, one must confess sins.

The fruit of the hardships endured is quickly obtained. All the accomplished ones of the past, in all their biographies, it is said that accomplishment was attained only through enduring hardships, and not from living in comfort and ease. It is said in the sutras that even merely experiencing suffering in a dream can exhaust past bad karma. Therefore, the occurrence of those adverse conditions in this life is because of the unfruitful results of what has not been cultivated, so they should be regarded as friends. Some people regard them as obstacles and hindrances and try to abandon them, but this is simply because their connection with the Dharma is shallow. Because it is cause and effect, one cannot blame others. The result of a cause that has gone before cannot be prevented by anyone, because it is self-created, so one should not shift responsibility to others, blame others, or make accusations. It is said in the sutras that the ripening of past karma does not belong to anyone. It is also said in the treatises: From non-virtue comes suffering, how can one be liberated from this? Day and night I must, only think about this. For example, when the face appears in a mirror, no matter what good or bad appears, one cannot blame the mirror, but rather one's own facial flaws and merits are revealed. Similarly, whatever happiness or suffering is experienced is due to the cause that went before. Therefore, one must abandon it at the time of the cause. At the time of the result, do not regard it as an enemy, do not regard it as a fault, do not regard it as a disaster, but regard it as a task, transform it into the path, generate patience, and regard it as joy. Regard it as a task and do not complain. Since sins and obscurations are exhausted, do not regard it as something to be abandoned. Because it is cause and effect, do not cultivate wrong views. This is to cut it off with an antidote. What benefits will arise from cutting it off? If you understand it in this way, then all the faults of the path will appear as virtues, and all disasters will appear as auspiciousness. All demons will become gods, and obstacles and hindrances will become accomplishments, so all the reasons for being happy about all the previous adverse conditions are the same. It is said in the Collection of Teachings: Even if white is not cultivated in butter, recognizing butter will make it white. Once you recognize butter in this way, you don't need to cultivate white again. Similarly, if you recognize your own mind, you don't need to cultivate Buddhahood again. That's it. Sickness and suffering
