Until a state of perfect abundance arises, it should be severed. When afflictions arise in the mindstream, they should be seized with the antidote of severance and then severed. It is said in the Limb: When afflictive thoughts arise, and when experiencing attachment, aversion, pleasure, and pain, take that very thing as a demon on the path. At that time, severance is held by the antidote. Thus it is said. Whenever afflictions arise, through view, meditation, and conduct, seize them with the antidote, and at that time, be victorious over the demon. This means that when afflictions arise in the mindstream, with the view, settle into emptiness; with meditation, cause them to be forgotten; with conduct, make their taste equal. First, from where do desire, hatred, delusion, pride, and jealousy initially come? Where do they abide in the middle? Where do they go in the end? What is their nature like? Where are they established? When looked at, they are not established in anything. They are not seen anywhere, and one settles into a state of non-identification. Also, it is said in the Compendium: The Buddhas, the Buddhas, it is said, are the means to liberate from samsara. Having realized the meaning of no affirmation or negation, one settles into a state of great equanimity. Thus it is said. Causing them to be forgotten through meditation means that when afflictions suddenly arise, do not prolong them with mindfulness, do not expand them, do not continue them, do not clearly establish them, cause them to be forgotten, cause them to disappear, cause them to be distracted, do not allow them to manifest, do not allow them to change, do not allow them to be remembered, do not allow them to appear. Like striking a sword in water, let them go without a trace. Like a bird flying in the sky, settle without a trace. Like snow falling into fire, let them dry on their own. Like tying a knot in a snake, let it untie on its own. It is said in the Limb: Whatever good or bad thoughts arise, not grasping them as objects is the key instruction. Settling without artifice is certain liberation. Let the mind's grasping vanish. Thus it is said. Making their taste equal through conduct means that it is the meaning of what is called severance. Whatever arises—attachment, aversion, afflictions, pleasure, pain, high, low, the eight worldly dharmas—make their taste equal, suppress their force, transform them into the path through practice, and decide them with key instructions. It is said in Scattered Sayings: What use is wealth and knowledge that is not present when needed? What use are profound key instructions that are not beneficial when adverse conditions occur? Thus it is said. Just as poison is induced by incompatible food, attachment, aversion, and afflictions are induced by the conditions of practice. This means that, for example,

If someone eats unsuitable food due to illness, or clears diseases through herbal remedies, as a sign of accumulation, diseases hidden in the veins will relapse and cause illness. Similarly, by practicing contemplation, latent afflictions will be awakened, becoming clear and coarse. Attachment to external enjoyment becomes stronger than before, and craving for inner beings becomes stronger than before. Similarly, hatred, ignorance, arrogance, jealousy, and stinginess also become coarser than before, becoming larger, becoming worse, becoming depressed, feeling worse than before, which is a sign of the reduction of afflictions and the exhaustion of bad karma. For example, in order to reveal the luster of gold by removing impurities, by burning black substances to evoke impurities, at first it looks like inferior gold, which is a sign of becoming good. If one does not obtain forbearance in the Dharma, one will be destroyed by the obstacles of the path, and regret, doubt, wrong views, and weariness of the Dharma will arise. That is to say, one becomes weary due to the asceticism and hardships on the reversed path, becomes tired of seclusion and hermitage, becomes frustrated because signs of realization and accomplishment do not appear in time, fears practice and cultivation, loses faith in the Dharma, doubts the oral instructions, and does not trust the lama, thinking, "Now the Dharma will not work." The 'Lelag' says: "Danger is greatest when views are wrong, enemies are harmful when vows are broken, obstacles are harmful when one's own mind is confused, and poison is greatest when clinging to self." When afflictions arise, reverse them with method and wisdom, realizing that emptiness and the method of transformation are the best antidotes. That is to say, reversal includes destroying afflictions with emptiness, transforming them into the path with method, and offering them with thought. The first is to control craving for enjoyment with emptiness, even if one eats food of faith, recites sutras and dedications, and does the yoga of food, if one enjoys it inwardly with a thought of craving, one will accumulate karmic results, because it is attachment. For craving for inner beings, one obtains supreme power, even if one can rely on them, one knows how to drip, take, return, and scatter, even if one wants to rely on them, if one does not abandon the thought of craving inwardly, one will accumulate karmic results, because the happiness of contaminated things is not the correct path, but the uncontaminated emptiness.
