Cut the short time in an instant. Cut the medium time before death. Cut the long time until enlightenment is attained. In short, cut until this demon of conceptuality is cut off. Also, from the Collection: Since there is no object to be cut in meaning, when the cutter is liberated, it is said to be an unerring and complete cut. From the beginning, the nature of reality is accompanied by adventitious stains. Examine the ground, path, and fruit, and destroy them with view, meditation, and action. This means that in the continuum of all sentient beings, there are two parts: the part of pure realization and the part of ignorance and defilement. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Wisdom and obscurations are two. That is with stains and without stains. Like water, gold, and space, it is considered pure as it is pure. Therefore, establish that purity as the ground, path, and fruit, and the part of ignorance and defilement should be destroyed by view, meditation, and action. There are three aspects to this: the abiding of the ground, the way of meditating on the path, and the way the fruit manifests. The first of these is called the ground, and it is called the cause. Its essence is that the cause pervades everything, and through the three good, bad, and medium conditions of the path, it is able to produce three kinds of fruits: superior, inferior, and medium. The divisions of the ground are: If realized, it is nirvana, the cause or ground for producing Buddhas. The divisions of the ground are: the ability to produce happiness and suffering in both samsara and nirvana. The examples of the ground are: like cotton, iron, or grain, where the fruit has not yet been produced, but if acted upon, anything can arise. Some say: Sentient beings are Buddhas from the very beginning. The five poisons are wisdom. Conceptuality is the nature of reality. If one strives for these, they are merely the causes that can arise, not the actual reality. If they were real, then sentient beings would be liberated effortlessly. Since this is not the case, liberation arises from the three levels of effort: great, medium, and small, resulting in the three levels of liberation: superior, medium, and inferior. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: If afflictions did not exist, then all embodied beings would be liberated. If conceptuality did not exist, then even if one tried, there would be no result. Some say: Not only is it the cause of Buddhahood, but it is Buddhahood itself. As it says in the Tantra: There is not a single sentient being who is not a Buddha. Also, in the Sutra: From the arising of ignorance to the extent that it matures, wisdom also arises to that extent.

Thus it is attained. If asked, does this clear away (adventitious stains)? These are definitive teachings. As the tantra says: All sentient beings are Buddhas, but are obscured by adventitious stains. If those stains are removed, they become Buddhas. Thus, it is cleared away. Therefore, when the cause is wool, it cannot be determined whether it is pūlu, or coarse wool and thread, anything can be made. Some say: At the base stage, it is the result of sentient beings, and also the cause of Buddha. The method of practicing the path is: to subdue with view, meditation, and action. Therefore, there are three aspects to the path: establishing the view, making meditation familiar, and the method of practicing conduct. First, the object, the emptiness of dharmatā, and the subject, the emptiness of mind, are both merged into one in the nature of emptiness. There are three divisions of view: the view arising from hearing, the view arising from thinking, and the view arising from meditation. First, the view that arises from relying on hearing the Dharma of the Great Vehicle is the development of a good understanding through analysis and investigation, thinking that emptiness is something that is without substance. Second, it is analyzed with reason. When thinking and investigating, one feels that there is nothing more suitable than this, and one develops a good understanding through analysis and investigation, thinking that it is like this. Third, one hears that there is something like this, sees the form with one's eyes, and practices without distraction, so that an experience that is not made up by understanding and conceptual thought arises manifestly in one's being. These three are like, for example, wanting to know about Indian fruits and so on, hearing that there is something like this, seeing the form with one's eyes, and tasting the flavor by eating it in one's mouth. Therefore, it is not enough to have a view that is heard with the ears, and to understand the general meaning by thinking and analyzing, but it must be mixed with the mind inseparably and experienced in a way that is free from experience. There are three ways to practice the view: what object to look at, who is looking, and how to look. First, to look at the object of emptiness, as it says in the Heart Sutra: The five aggregates are empty, and one should look at them perfectly. The one who looks is: one's own awareness, which appears as anything when not examined, but when examined, it is without substance.
