May special compassion arise for all sentient beings, and may great devotion arise for the Lama. Whatever circumstances arise, may they appear as aids to virtuous practice. May there be no fear or anxiety in the face of adverse conditions. These are the signs of completion. Thorough completion means that until all of these, or even one of them, has arisen, one should increase the repetitions. With unwavering determination, cultivate endurance, generate perseverance, hold a heavy heart, and dwell with courage. Even when faced with death, do not turn back, but practice. At that time, if the signs of completion have not arisen, do not be displeased. If they have arisen, do not generate a mind of joy. Whether they arise or not, whether there is joy or displeasure, abandon hope and worry, and rest without reliance. If there is still a mind of hope or worry, that too is a demon, so abandon and discard it. Even if appearances seem dualistic, do not cling to appearances, but know them to be unreal, for then you will be on the path. The signs of having subdued gods and demons are: the experiences of a yogi's practice, whether great, medium, or small, appearing in reality or in dreams. Gods and demons bring food and drink to oneself, come to greet one, prostrate respectfully, offer wealth, offer sacrifices, prostrate and circumambulate, request the Dharma, offer life mantras, and bestow common siddhis. At that time, one should guide them to take refuge and generate bodhicitta, bestow vows, and establish them on the path of virtue. In the Limb it says: "Siddhis arise from nagas and demons, patrons are made by tsan gods and kings, food and wealth are provided by mothers and dakinis, fame is proclaimed by gods and demons of existence." The ultimate accomplishment is: those who practice Chöd are temporarily cured of diseases, demonic influences are pacified, and leprosy is healed, and they are satisfied with that. Thinking that the necessity and result of Chöd have arisen, they later do not cultivate the virtuous practice of Chöd, because the result of Chöd is minor, and one should not be satisfied with that. One must cultivate it until one attains the Buddhahood that possesses the two benefits. In the Limb it says: "Do not generate a mind of desire, do not be satisfied with temporary benefits or slight qualities, do not boast, do not be conceited, and until supreme qualities have arisen, strive to practice diligently. Until the equality of samsara and nirvana is realized, one should continuously practice."

Oh! In general, if great miracles are shown in manifest appearances, dreams, etc., and obstacles are displayed, then no matter how powerful the gods and demons are, one must be determined. If one is too attached, it will cause serious consequences. If one develops a lax attitude and remains in that state, one will not be able to cut through, one will not be able to suppress, and one will not be able to subdue. For example, when a city wall and a cannon meet, the cannon will win. When a tree and an axe meet, the axe will win. When a stone and a hammer meet, the hammer will win. Just as when wood and fire meet, the fire will win, when relative truth and ultimate truth meet, ultimate truth will win. When tangible things and intangible things meet, intangible things will win. When gods and demons meet the cutter, the cutter will win, this is the nature of reality. At that time, one should not have high or low distinctions in one's mind regarding faults and virtues, obstacles and accomplishments. Do not be discouraged by adverse conditions, and do not be arrogant in favorable conditions. Let the mind be like a cottonwood leaf, without swaying back and forth. Like a feather on a scale, do not sway from side to side. Like a snail on the road, do not be sticky and clingy. Completely abandon self-grasping, completely abandon cherished thoughts, and transform discomfort in body and mind into the path. No matter what difficulties arise, think: This is just the mind, it is unreal, unreal is emptiness, and let go with that thought. Do not meaninglessly judge good or bad in appearances. Do not engage in thoughts of pleasure and pain in the mind of emptiness. Do not create actions of attachment and aversion towards the falsity of the six consciousnesses. If there is no sign of subduing in the preliminary practice, then abandon the thought of subduing. If there is no sign of suppression in the main practice, then cast aside desires. If there is no sign of completion in the final practice, then abandon the thought of completion. Desire and doubt are demons, and the wise should abandon them. That is to say, the preliminary practice requires a sign of subduing gods and demons, but it did not appear. The main practice requires a sign of suppression, but it did not appear. The final practice requires a sign of completion, but it did not appear. If the preliminary practice is not subdued, then the main practice cannot be suppressed, just as one cannot wash with water without removing the dirt. If the main practice is not suppressed, then there will be no sign of completion afterwards, just as one cannot subdue without conquering the enemy. Therefore, if one does not cut through in any place that is difficult to cut through, and if one lets it go, even if one is not hindered by obstacles, it will bring obstacles to one's retinue, and even bring misfortune to livestock.
