As mentioned above. When one abides equally in the nature of reality, the hordes of demons cannot bear it and display various miracles. In outer, inner, secret, manifest experiences, visions, and dreams, they show various forms and utter various unpleasant sounds. These are signs of provoking evil spirits. There are three aspects to this: the reasons for provoking or not provoking, the signs of provoking, and the manifestation of demonic torment. The first is, going to a dangerous place and lying down in a state of practice, observing the power of the evil spirit. Ideally, it can be provoked in three days. Moderately, it can be provoked in five or seven days. At worst, it will definitely be provoked in ten days. The reasons for not provoking, or provoking slightly, or provoking slowly are: being too weak to rise, or the yogi being too powerful and suppressing the evil spirit so it cannot rise, or the evil spirit itself being too strong and the yogi being too weak to provoke it, or the practice of Chö being too short to provoke it. There are many possibilities, so one should know which it is. If one's own power is weak, one will not provoke it. For example, a beggar sleeping secretly, a farmer guarding crops, a merchant traveling at night, a nomad searching for lost livestock, or a thief going to steal at night, these people will not provoke it because they have no power. Those who do not contend with ghosts, or who seek refuge in them, will not be provoked even if they sleep in the place where they are. If, upon going to that place, the fear decreases as time passes, it means the evil spirit is weak and easy to provoke. If the evil spirit's power is small and its miracles are small, it is easy to subdue, but even if subdued, there is little merit. If one is not afraid at first and feels happy, but as time passes, the fear increases and one feels increasingly unhappy, it means the evil spirit is strong and difficult to provoke. If one subdues a powerful evil spirit with great miracles, the merit is great. In general, evil spirits from above are easy to provoke, while evil spirits from below are difficult to provoke. Places like temples and empty houses may initially feel terrifying and have great miracles, but they are easy to subdue. Places like springs and lakes may initially feel pleasant and have small miracles, but they are difficult to subdue. Yogis and mantra practitioners with confident views, those who practice deity yoga, those who are harmed by ghosts and spirits, and those who have doubts in their minds can provoke them in one day. Provoking, subduing, and completely vanquishing can also happen in one day. There are also cases where miracles appear in the evening and end in the morning.

Oh! In the past, there have been many kinds and ways of illusions appearing and then disappearing. Mostly, it takes three days. The reason for summoning is: There are three signs of summoning: the outer sign is the sign of summoning gods and demons; the inner is the sign of summoning mental constructs; and the intermediate is the sign of summoning sickness. First, go to that dangerous place, separate body and mind, abandon the body naked like a corpse, the mind without fear, without apprehension, without thought, without arrogance, abide in a state without self-nature. Leaving it soft like cotton, scattered like ruins, abiding like a whole, then one cannot bear its blessings and the glory of Dharma-nature, cannot bear the power of emptiness. Because yogis cannot bear the practice, various illusions arise. The greatest is showing various unpleasant forms in sight, transforming into tigers and lions, showing the way of eating; transforming into dogs, jackals and bears, showing the way of biting; transforming into cattle and yaks, showing the way of beating; transforming into frogs, snakes, scorpions and centipedes and other fearful beings, showing fear and panic; transforming into enemies, men and women, holding various weapons to chase, showing beating, showing binding, coming to seize, coming to appear, being rolled into a whirlpool, reversing head and tail, transferring from that dwelling to another place, transforming into mothers, sisters and beautiful women, showing the gestures of attachment, showing smiles and deception, transforming into fathers, brothers and friends, showing crying, showing wailing, uttering fierce sounds and unpleasant noises. Transforming into Khenpos and Acharyas, saying, "Your Dharma is wrong, the path is wrong," saying, "Your life is only today," saying, "Now you will die in a hundred days," saying, "You will be reborn in hell immediately after death," emitting formless whooshing sounds, saying, "Hit your ears, kill you," and so on, which will appear manifestly to the superior, will appear in experience to the intermediate, and will appear in dreams to the inferior. Intermediate illusions are: fire burning, being carried away by water, being rolled into a whirlpool, cliffs collapsing, rocks collapsing, earthquakes, the whole earth trembling, shaking and swaying.
