In the Sutras, it is said: Explaining the cause of distinction, from where does it arise? Without cause, there is no effect; without action, there is no effect. It is not different from complete purification; the Alaya-consciousness does not change differently. If complete purification is definitely different, then the Alaya-consciousness will not be permanent. It is without beginning, without end, and permanent, and the four extremes are completely abandoned. The Tathagatagarbha is also known as the manifestation of wisdom and sound. The essence between each other is not different, existing like a finger ring. The various realms are the Alaya, and the Sugatagarbha is also this. On this essence, the Sugata taught the name of Alaya. It is proclaimed that the essence is the Alaya, but the dull-witted ones do not understand. Thus it is said. If distinguished, there is the uncontaminated Alaya of the meaning of combination, and the contaminated Alaya with all habits. Among them, the essence is the Dhatugarbha, unchanging, and from the aspect of becoming the basis of Nirvana, it is established as uncontaminated. For example, the surface of a mirror is clean and clear without dirt, but from the aspect of becoming the basis and foundation for the appearance of various impure images, it is established as impure. Similarly, it is established as contaminated by various habits. Among them, although various habits manifest as purity and impurity, arising and ceasing, and so on, the Alaya-consciousness does not change before or after, because it is the nature of immovability. For example, images do not cause various changes in the surface of the mirror, or the power of the sun makes the moon appear to wax and wane, but the basis itself is unchanging. As it is said in that very Sutra: Just as the moon waxes and wanes, ignorant beings imagine it, but the moon actually has no waxing or waning, appearing clearly in this continent and that continent. Likewise, the Alaya-consciousness, ignorant children imagine it, constantly imagining arising and ceasing, but it is the uncontaminated Buddha. Thus it is said. All phenomena are the basis of beings, habits, drowsiness, and so on, are made impure by conceptual thoughts, if transformed into something else, it is uncontaminated, when the uncontaminated self-nature is attained, then they become stable and permanent. Thus it is said. Among them, the Alaya of true meaning is the perfectly established reality without change. The habits that dwell on it are established by the impure other-powered nature of the completely conceptualized. In what way is it established?

In the ālaya, due to the delusion of grasping as dualistic to the originally pure object, it appears as otherness; similarly, the forms of things such as men, women, horses, and cattle, also grasping onto the originally pure nature, abiding as the adornment of the pure land, appear as otherness; like the inside and outside of a dream, grasping as dualistic to what is originally non-dual, the three forms appearing as self are the basis and form of delusion. The manner of the continuous habits of delusion is also: from the basis of the ālaya, the consciousness of the ālaya becomes the cause or condition for the arising of other consciousnesses, giving rise to grasping that does not actually exist in the object, and when the five sense consciousnesses appear in the object, their respective parts are actually born from the consciousness of the ālaya, therefore abiding in non-conceptualization. Even if karma is not accumulated, it is the door or support for accumulation. After that, grasping the object as desirable is the mind consciousness. Grasping it as any of the three: attachment, aversion, or indifference, is the afflicted mind. These two, regarding the inner and outer dharmas, even though they have not been established as dualistic, clinging to the habits of dualism, accumulating karma on the contaminated ālaya, therefore experiencing various sufferings and pleasures of samsara. The sutra says: "Mind is the chief, mind is extremely swift, mind goes to the forefront of all dharmas." That is how it is. That is to say, actually not existing elsewhere, but appearing as otherness, this impure, like the other appearance of a dream, together with the appearing things, is the impure other-powered, which is the object to be grasped. Regarding that which is to be grasped, without being established as self, conceptually grasping as self with the mind, is the grasping consciousness. Thus, in order to purify these deluded appearances of samsara, first, the ālaya of the fundamental meaning must be determined, and the nature of the originally pure nature must be known, this is the basis. After that, generating bodhicitta and accumulating the two accumulations is practicing the perfectly established without error. Through its power, in the result, clinging to bad philosophical views, etc., for delusions without basis, cutting off the completely imputed nature, and the various delusions appearing as grasper and grasped, cutting off the completely imputed of names. Through its power, obtaining the special qualities of transformation of the basis, the mind consciousness transforms into equality wisdom, the afflicted mind transforms into discriminating wisdom, the five sense consciousnesses transform into accomplishing wisdom, the ālaya consciousness transforms into mirror-like wisdom, the ālaya becomes all dharmas.
