The mountains, valleys, and towns, as well as sentient beings, and the inner body, and the senses, and the sense consciousness, and all the conceptualizations of memory and awareness, all of these are appearances of a dream. Likewise, they are merely appearances and do not exist in anything. From the depths of your heart, without a moment's distraction, meditate on the thought that it is unreal. Similarly, all the past phenomena before yesterday are like a dream last night, a realm of mind. Today's appearance is also a mind that appears without being. Last night and tonight are like dreams, tomorrow and tomorrow night are future dreams. For all that appears, whether positive or negative, pleasant or painful, establish the awareness that it is a dream, and do not meditate on the thought of reality for even a moment. All past phenomena are like yesterday's appearance and last night's dream. All present phenomena are like today's appearance and tonight's dream. All future phenomena are like tomorrow's appearance and tomorrow night's dream. The essence is non-existent, but the appearance is unceasing. It appears without being, and from the moment of appearance, it is not established. All positive and negative, pleasant and painful, are nothing other than a dream. Think in this way and know it to be unreal. Similarly, even when walking, sitting, eating, moving, or speaking, hold onto the thought of "being in a dream" with unwavering mindfulness. Whatever appears, whatever you do, whatever you think, for everything, without separating from the awareness that it is a dream, train in unreality, vagueness, obscurity, half-and-half, looseness, sparseness, and great non-grasping. Wherever you go, wherever you stay, whoever you associate with, whatever food you eat, whatever words you speak, whatever thoughts arise, whatever actions you do, whatever appearances arise, at that very moment, it is a real dream. The nature of a dream is unreality. The nature of unreality is non-grasping. The nature of non-grasping is vagueness. The nature of vagueness is obscurity. The nature of obscurity is half-and-half. The nature of half-and-half is looseness. The nature of looseness is sparseness. Everything is clear appearance without existence. Train in this way with unwavering, focused intention. Thus, by realizing that the appearance of objects is a dream, the grasped is naturally realized to be without inherent existence, as follows: By examining the mistaken appearance of the grasped object as the dream itself, the grasped

When clinging to concepts ceases, clinging naturally falls away. By blocking the object, the subject is blocked. When the various phenomena that appear as objects are understood as dreams, the mind that first arises grasping at the object is also understood as a dream. Then, the mind that acts in a grasping manner also appears as a dream. When the object is understood to be unreal, the grasping and the grasped that measure it also appear as unreal. This is because the power of blocking the object causes the subject to be blocked as well. Next, the way in which the grasped is reversed when the grasping is reversed is explained: Sometimes, the appearance itself measures the dream. When that mind is thoroughly sought for in the outer, inner, and intermediate realms, the mind that has no essence to grasp and no support is like the expanse of the sky. That awareness, free from memory, thought, seeking, and anger, spontaneously arises as empty and clear, free from elaboration. When grasping ceases, the grasped ceases by itself. When the subject is reversed, at the time of liberation from grasping at the object, the appearing object seems unrelated, and the basis for analysis collapses. At that time, it is the non-dual, self-arisen wisdom. When the mind that measures the object in a dream examines the place of origin, dwelling, and going, and the essence of the object, and when the awareness that is not established in any of these arises as empty and without support, the inner grasping is naturally liberated. The outer appearing object appears as an empty self-appearance without grasping. This is the non-dual wisdom awareness of grasping and the grasped, which is called the mind of enlightenment. As it says in the Secret Essence Tantra: "In the various appearances, the nature is secret. The essence itself is extremely secret." That is the meaning. When it appears in this way, the view transcends the mind and is free from grasping and the grasped. When one realizes and becomes accustomed to this, the grasping and the grasped are reversed, and attachment to the object and the mind is liberated. When the experience of non-grasping arises in the appearance, and when one looks at the awareness that arises, everything appears as empty and without a basis. This is the original state of nature. The grasping and the grasped are the discriminating thoughts that grasp at the object. Therefore, being free from these two is called liberation from attachment to the object. At that time, when the experience of non-grasping arises in the object, and when one looks at the awareness that arises, everything appears as empty and without a basis. This is the original state of nature, the appearance of the exhaustion of phenomena. As it says in the Padma Chöpen Tantra: "The exhausted appearances and all objects, and all the discriminating thoughts of grasping, are liberated. Like the self-luminous, pure sky, without beginning or end, is suchness."
