In the Sutra of Governing the Country, it says that these dharmas are without inherent existence, like accumulation, chaff, and inferior goods, and like a water tree without any essence. Thus it is. Therefore, not only are all dharmas like the moon in water, but also the awareness of bodhicitta, which is the naturally pure essence of dharma, is said to be apparent but without inherent existence, and is said to be the wisdom of each individual. The mind that is unstained by extremes and free from defilements, the nature of the moon in water, is apparent, empty, and free from elaboration. Profound, peaceful, inconceivable wisdom, beyond expression, self-luminous and clear, should be known as an eye ailment. In this, the moon in water is without self-nature in terms of objects and characteristics, and therefore transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence. Just as appearance is not obstructed in the line of sight, this pure nature of mind is also without objects and characteristics, and therefore transcends the extremes of elaboration of existence and non-existence. However, through the blessings of the guru, in the face of one's own awareness, it appears as a great, unobstructed, empty and clear self-appearance. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: Profound, peaceful, free from elaboration, luminous, uncompounded, I have found a dharma like nectar. No matter to whom I show it, they will not understand, therefore, I will remain silent and alone in the forest. Thus it is said. The instruction on the nature of reality, free from extremes, is: Just as the moon is not established as the moon when it appears as a moon in water, when various things appear, the statement that various things are established is not established. Free from the wisdom of understanding the terms of the three times, leave it in the inconceivable suchness. Just as there is no moon when the moon's reflection appears in the water, from the time of appearance, it is not established in that way, so leave whatever appears in a state free from conceptual judgment. In the All-Creating King Tantra, it says: Alas! The mind is the nature of suchness, in the great bliss of suchness, free from effort, possessing all aspects, yet completely without aspects, do not fabricate, leave the mind in suchness. Thus it is. To leave the mind naturally without fabrication: The bodhicitta that is without going and coming, is all-pervasive, without inside and outside, beyond thought, and does not grasp at distinctions. In the nature of dharma that is without limitation or partiality, do not seek for narrowness, wideness, height, or lowness. The nature of inner, self-arisen wisdom is the nature of being without going and coming, inside and outside, so do not grasp at what is beyond the realm of mind, saying, "This is it." Since there is no limitation or partiality, narrowness, wideness, height, and lowness are not established, so do not bind it in the box of meditative mind.

From the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: The ultimate is not an object of the mind's investigation, for the mind is said to be conventional. As appearances are without essence, it is shown that conceptual analysis is meaningless: Without thought or concept, abide in the primordial state, whatever is, is everything, like the moon in water. Neither true nor false, samsara and nirvana are equality itself, rest the mind in the natural state of suchness. However it appears, it is beyond extremes, therefore samsara and nirvana are equal. Therefore, one should not deliberately meditate on emptiness through mental fabrication. This state should be understood as it is in the sutras. From the Sutra of the Ornament of Manifest Awareness: Mañjuśrī, the moon in water appears but has no intrinsic nature. Likewise, all phenomena appear but have no intrinsic nature. Negating the clinging of the mind that grasps at extremes: Appearances, existence, samsara, and nirvana are like the image of the clear moon in water. Primordially empty, inherently empty, self-nature empty from the beginning. To this, imposing existence or non-existence through mental fabrication is delusion, so do not cling to differences, sectarianism, or philosophical tenets. All phenomena are without foundation, therefore primordially empty; without essence, therefore inherently empty; without characteristics, therefore self-nature is empty from the beginning. In this equality, measuring in terms of right and wrong, large and small, correct and incorrect, high and low, etc., is meaningless, so one should acknowledge boundlessness like the sky. As the Laṅkāvatāra Sutra says: As long as the mind engages, there is no end to the vehicle. When the mind transforms, there is no vehicle and no coming or going. Determining the order of realization and non-realization: As long as there is the clinging of ego-grasping, there is no time to be liberated from samsara itself. Without grasping, naturally abiding, the innate, genuine mind, primordially pure, inherently liberated, beyond all extremes, is self-nature itself, what need is there to alter it? Even if there is a subtle clinging like "This is it," one will be bound in samsara. The Dohā says: Even the sting of a sesame seed husk only causes suffering. With non-grasping, naturally abiding, awareness naturally arises as vast and expansive, which is the natural flow of mind itself. As the Great Garuda says: Without cultivation, naturally the meaning of being without limit, the innate, genuine self-nature of mind arises, that is the natural state, what need is there to alter it? That itself is the determination of the Great Perfection of self-nature: Objects appear as empty, like the moon in water.
