It is said to be like the moon in water. It is explained in order to practice the meaning of what was said. All phenomena of samsara and nirvana appear but are not truly existent, just like the moon in water. In the Intermediate Mother Sutra, it says: Subhuti, all phenomena appear but are not truly existent, just like the moon in water. In order to practice these meanings, they are divided into three aspects: the ground, the path, and the result. First, the instruction on the ground that appears but has no inherent existence is: In the center of the mind's deep and clear ocean, spontaneously accomplished images naturally arise, but due to the impurities of the waves of grasping and being grasped, they are not clear, stirred by the winds of conceptual thought. Worldly delusion arises from self-grasping, wisdom is not clear, ignorance is affliction, and one is endlessly immersed in samsara. In the center of the mind's naturally pure ocean, the basis of inseparable form and wisdom, Buddha's teachings, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, are spontaneously and perfectly present. Primordial ignorance is the foundation, and the waves of dualistic grasping are stirred by conceptual ignorance, obscuring the clear images of the qualities of the dharmadhatu. Under the influence of karma and afflictions, various illusory appearances become clear, and one wanders in samsara, with illusion increasing. For the sake of vastness and clarity, and for holding the image of wisdom, the dharmadhatu is like a pure ocean. The winds of ignorance, grasping, and being grasped stir it and make it turbid. Thus it is said. When various phenomena appear in this confused way, this appearance is also like the moon in water. This is the instruction: Just as the images of stars in clear water are clear, unmoving, and appear as if they exist, the illusory images that appear in the water of the mind, appear as if they exist, how pitiful are all beings! Just as the images of stars appear in a clear pond, when the mind is clear water, and the senses are clear gates, the appearances of the six objects of the external and internal dharmas, such as form, appear like images, but the mind is confused by clinging to them as real. Therefore, like clear water, in the senses and the mind, the habitual patterns of beginningless stars, the objects of memory, the aspect of appearance that is not different from the mind, appear like images, and that appearing object is within the grasping and being grasped.

Attachment to arising knowledge, clinging to desire, aversion, rejection, and affirmation, binds. From the Samadhiraja Sutra: Just as the moon rises in the clear sky, its reflection also appears in the clear lake, but the moon has not moved into the water. Know all dharmas to be the same. This is the self-form of the stable habitual patterns of the field of appearance. It is shown that if the five senses' manifestation of dualistic images is not grasped by the mind, then its nature is not stained. Proclaiming the nature of existence as like the moon in water, with the certainty of one's own realization, as devoid of inherent existence: What is this thing, not real, unidentifiable? Not with characteristics, nor without characteristics. Not existent, not nonexistent, beyond the extremes of pleasure and pain. The saying, "It is merely an image," is fitting. When looking at these appearances as dharmas with the example of the moon in water, one sees these appearances not as particles, but as empty forms. One realizes that the nature of things, non-things, existence, non-existence, truth, and falsehood are not established in any way. Thinking, "This appearance is different from before, how wonderful," it is laughable. Then one sees that appearances are without inherent existence. Supreme reverence arises for the Bhagavan. Because all dharmas are empty in nature, like the moon in water. Which dharmas are said to be like the moon in water? The six, form and so on, are like the moon in water, because they appear without being, because their nature is not established, because their appearance is not interrupted, because they appear in delusion. The six, eye, eye faculty, eye consciousness, and so on, are like the moon in water, empty and accumulating and hollow. Like illusion, like a water tree without essence. One should realize that all are empty in truth. The six objects, form and so on, the six doors, eye and so on, the six, eye faculty and so on, the six, eye consciousness and so on, are said to be like the moon in water. Why are they like the moon in water? Because they are merely appearances, their nature is not established, their appearance is not interrupted, they appear without being in delusion. Therefore, because they appear without being, they are hollow, because they are merely images, they are empty, because they appear without being true, they are like illusion, because they have no essence, they are like water trees. One should know that all are merely playing in the appearance of emptiness.
