Furthermore, realization is like fire. Realizing the self-nature of awareness as utterly devoid of basis is realization. By not straying from the state of realization, experiences such as bliss, clarity, and non-thought arise. Realization comes from realizing the reality of what and what is. Through familiarizing oneself with that, warmth of body and mind is attained, hence it is called experience. The ultimate result is realizing the nature of all phenomena as illusory, the state of emptiness without basis, like a mirage, thereby definitely arising from samsara, and attaining nirvana. As it is said therein: "Through wisdom, having fully known the nature of phenomena, one will completely transcend the three realms." These phenomena that appear but lack inherent existence, should be ascertained as the form of emptiness that appears without existence. In the sky-like space, unborn and free from elaboration, may all beings attain the state of perfect peace. The apprehended and the apprehender, like a mirage, are on the verge of destruction. The darkness of delusion and ignorance is like the dawning of a bright day. The self-arisen, clear light of the sun rises from within. May others, like myself, also truly see the true nature. Though phenomena appear to exist and are diverse, by appearing as non-existent, the delusion of dualistic grasping is pacified. Through non-dual equality, everything is thoroughly perfected. May all beings be liberated all at once. From the Great Perfection, the resting in illusion, this chapter on the mirage is the commentary on the third vajra place. Thus, from the absence of coming, in the nature of absence of going, all phenomena are shown to be like mirages. Again, here the Victorious One said, "Like a mirage." That which is said, listen as it is truly explained. Thus, all phenomena of existence, samsara and nirvana, appear but lack inherent existence, like a mirage. In the Intermediate Mother it is said: "Subhuti, all phenomena, from the very beginning, are without going, therefore they are like a mirage." The meaning of what is said is shown through the three: basis, path, and result. First, the basis, the mirage without going, is ascertained by seeing. Just as in the midday sun of summer, plains are like masses of water in a mirage. Through the power of the mind's extreme habituation to self-grasping, the deluded appearance of samsara appears like a mirage. In summer, on the entire long plain, when the sun's rays shine, and one's eyes are afflicted by the heat, and the vapor that flies upward combines, it is like a stream of water.

Although it appears, there is no water. Likewise, the nature of awareness, the very nature of primordial purity, from the subtle aspect of clinging to causes as self, and from the empty, soft thangka of self-radiance appearing as objects, arises spontaneously like the water of a mirage. Even the cycle of the three realms and six classes of beings should be understood as merely the clear appearance of an image without inherent existence. As it says in the Sutra of the Noble King of Samadhi: "Just as in the midday sun of summer, beings tormented by thirst, travelers, see a mass of water in a mirage, know all phenomena to be like that." Thus it is. To explain that from the moment of appearance, there is no essence, there is no essence to be grasped here. The nature is non-dual, empty, and peaceful Dharma. Unborn, like the sky, and without self. Know it to be unborn and beyond comprehension. When one understands particles, directions, colors, and shapes in the very nature of appearance, all outer and inner phenomena are seen as being like the sky. As it says in the Sutra of the Noble Jewel Lamp: "All phenomena are like the Sugata." And in the Sutra of the Wheel of Non-Regression: "Ignorance is like the sky, all phenomena are without characteristics." Thus it is. Because appearance is emptiness itself, to explain the lack of inherent existence: Just as this appearance, from the very moment of appearance, although it appears to arise, it is like an unarisen mirage. Although it appears to abide, it is like an unarisen mirage. Although it appears to cease, it is like an unceasing mirage. Know that appearance is without inherent existence. Thus, from the very moment of various appearances, its own essence is not established. The formation of the outer container world, the arising of flowers and so on, and all the perceptions of sentient beings, the inner content, are without arising from the very moment of appearing to arise, because the arisen is not established in the essence of the object and the awareness that appears. Likewise, from the very moment of appearing to abide as if it were solid and firm, there is no establishment of abiding and the abider. And from the very moment of the world dissolving into emptiness, and the aggregates of sentient beings appearing to transmigrate, there is no cessation or transmigration. Like the water of a mirage, know that appearance is without inherent existence. As it says in the Gongdü: "Emaho, wondrous and amazing Dharma!"
