Just as forms are born similar but with different appearances, the self-radiance of the primordial realm of awareness, the great spontaneously accomplished emptiness and clarity, is like a form. Because one does not recognize its true nature, one mistakes it for grasping and being grasped. Awareness, similar to its own radiance, appears as the five aggregates, five elements, five poisons, five objects, and five sense faculties, etc. All the different forms are manifestations of various illusions such as pervasive afflictions, obstructions, impurity, karma, and the five poisons. The three realms and six classes of beings revolve due to the gathering of causes and conditions. The Kunjed Gyalpo Tantra says, "Like a shadow is an example of a form, it is a place of various illusions." The Condensed Tantra says, "When conditions gather, the wheel of karmic illusion arises greatly." The cycle of illusion turning into further illusion is also like this: The unwise, clinging to truth, deceive children. From being bound in the box of eye-mirages of the five objects, they grasp at a self without meaning and look at illusion. Children who do not realize that samsara is the nature of an eye-mirage are always those with clinging minds. To the illusory appearances of form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, which appear but have no essence, they cling and are attached with the mind's consciousness. Because they crave objects and grasp at self and what belongs to self, they revolve continuously, just as children cling to the true self-nature of their own toy forms. Therefore, if one does not understand that the appearances of the world are without inherent existence, because appearance is deceptive, many who enter the path are like children. The Bodhicharyavatara says, "When a sandcastle collapses, children are very upset. Likewise, when praise and fame decline, my mind is like a child's." Just as children are attached to appearances like eye-mirages, yogis should realize the lack of inherent existence by knowing the nature. The instruction is: All that appears and exists, the environment and beings, happiness and suffering, high and low, appear without existence like the shadow of a butter lamp, like the second image from squeezing the eyes, like the darkness of a night full of afflictions. If one examines the unexamined appearance, there is nothing to identify. If one examines closely, the nature is beyond limits, like space, unborn, in the primordial nature of reality, from this day on.

Be sure to understand it clearly. Therefore, all the happiness and suffering, high and low, of the phenomenal world, the container and its contents, are like an eye disease. The meaning of an eye disease is that from the form of objects, other forms of the same category appear, such as shadows, double moons, and darkness, etc. In short, it is different from the real object. For example, its depiction and appearance, and its transformation into its image, are all relative to that object and belong to the category of eye disease. Just as it cannot function as a real object, if all phenomena are examined, they appear like an eye disease but have no self-nature. Without examination, they have a pleasing nature. If examined deeply, all gross appearances are indivisible particles, and even subtle awareness has no essence or graspable entity. Therefore, it is not established anywhere, like the sky. As the Middle Mother Sutra says: All phenomena are without self-nature because they are the nature of an eye disease, and they are empty of essence from the beginning. How is that? It is explained: Illusion is baseless, like an eye disease, its root is severed, and its characteristics are completely cut off. When examined, it is empty, appearing as if it exists, but it should be understood as unborn self-nature from the beginning. Thus, samsara appears like an eye disease, and its own characteristics are severed. When examined, it is empty, nothing more than self-appearance, which is the primordial nature of phenomena. Here, primordiality refers to the emptiness of the nature of all phenomena, which appears in the face of one's own awareness but is not established in reality. It is not something that is examined at a distant time. Therefore, whatever appears, know it to be the self-radiance of self-appearance, like an eye disease, which is not established in the face of reality and awareness. As the Ornament of Wisdom Appearance Sutra says: Manjushri, an eye disease appears but has no self-nature. Similarly, all phenomena appear but have no self-nature. From the rootless self-nature, the subtle part of ignorance causes illusions to appear very clearly, just as in the middle of a distant desert, even a small thing appears large. From the small (clinging) of grasping self where there is no self, these great illusions of samsara appear. The small appears large and confuses everything. For example, in a very vast desert, in the distance, a crow appears as big as a yak, and a yak appears as big as a mountain, because the desert is dry and hot.
