Homage! Anger and other emotions are not in any place or direction. When they appear as non-existent, they cannot be found even when searched for. Arising from conditions, emptiness is like the sound of an echo in a valley. The words of others are also like sounds arising from conditions. If examined, they are non-existent, merely reflections of appearances. If strongly clung to, they are unreal like the sky. Since good and bad, gain and loss, are not found, do not grasp sounds as real meanings; they are empty of truth. Be sure to realize that everything is like an echo in a valley. By this, the habitual tendencies of beginningless samsara can be eliminated. In particular, anger and hatred will not be subdued. One can also obtain the patience of the noble ones and not fall into the lower realms, gradually increasing the resources for attaining Buddhahood. The night is also as before, especially the experience of an echo in a valley. Sounds are empty of sound, and patience is obtained in the Dharma. Therefore, meditate on the meaning of something like an echo in a valley. From the Great Perfection, Illusion's Repose, The Chapter on Something Like an Echo in a Valley, the sixth. Furthermore, here, the Victorious One speaks of the city of gandharvas, which is also spoken for the sake of practice, listen! The primordial, clear light, the Dharma appearing in the sky, is a spontaneously accomplished city adorned with qualities, without beginning, end, middle, or edge, abiding here. From that very nature arises the castle of the mind of ignorance, the six realms of the city of gandharvas arising from grasping and being grasped, without a basis, with various appearances of forms, born from the mind of habitual illusion. If one realizes this, the nature of mind is the primordial state. When not realized, it is the current illusory mind. How can it be identified? It is the city of gandharvas. What other example is there besides itself? However, all of this is without inherent existence, like the city of gandharvas on a plain at sunset. Both the basis and what depends on it are illusory minds. Habitual tendencies themselves, if examined, have no essence. If one abides in the nature, it is naturally liberated as it is. Therefore, there is no difficulty in abandoning fear in the heart. One should know that existence and peace are all the nature of emptiness and purity. All objects are the city of gandharvas, truly empty. All minds are the city of gandharvas, empty in the present moment. Since objects and mind are both empty like the city of gandharvas, do not cling to anything even slightly, abide in the natural state. Therefore, do not fabricate with conceptual thoughts about the phenomena that appear as non-existent, do not deliberately grasp. Beginningless illusion also arises from clinging and grasping, so now one should know the nature of non-grasping. The undefiled Dharmas of the noble ones and all phenomena, as well as peaceful nirvana, are unreal,

Both conditioned and unconditioned things, like a mirage city and space, are primordially peaceful; please realize the state of no birth. Attachment is unattainable, and so is hatred, ignorance, pride, and jealousy. Knowing that all conceptual thoughts are like a mirage city, realize that the nature of afflictions is empty. May we realize the dharma of mind-essence and enlightenment as non-dual, immaculate like space. The nature of samsara is primordially nirvana; deluded thoughts are completely pacified, like clouds clearing in the sky. Knowing the way of peace in the initial arising, abide in the state of wisdom, which is peaceful, empty, and clear. Although the realm of thought is unattainable in the state of no birth, if the magical display of birth has not subsided into the expanse, please cut the root of conceptual delusion. Although there is no distinction between what should and should not be done, or what should be accepted and rejected, if there is a mind that grasps things as real, please rely on the profound dharma as an antidote to afflictions. Without inner or outer, may mind-essence be liberated in its own state. To realize this is to be a wise person. Now, meditate on that meaning itself. The preliminaries are as before, and all the main practices of dharma should be understood as mirage cities. Form is the emptiness of appearance, a mirage city; sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharma are all mirage cities. Mind and negation-affirmation, all conceptual thoughts that arise, are mirage cities; meditate clearly in that state. Whatever appears is a mirage city; day and night, at all times, practice as before. Seeing the mirage city as similar to conditioned phenomena, abide in the state of non-reality, and all elaborations will be pacified. Empty and clear, self-arisen luminosity will dawn from within. Even in dreams, see the mirage city. Practice emanation and transformation as before. By liberating from the clinging to reality, the bonds of grasping and the grasped are cut. All habitual tendencies are completely pacified, and liberation is attained. Therefore, please meditate on the mirage city itself. From the Great Perfection, Illusion's Repose, the chapter on the mirage city is the seventh. Here, the Victorious Ones say that all dharmas are like illusions; please listen as they are explained truthfully. From the state of primordially luminous nature itself, due to ignorance grasping at self, the deluded appearances of samsara manifest in various ways, like illusions. Although they are non-existent, they appear, and happiness and suffering are experienced separately. This is the self-appearance of the minds of beings.
