All of these appear as illusions due to the power of causes and conditions. In reality, they are not true, but rather vague, empty, and transparent. Meditate on this moment by moment, day and night, constantly. Whatever arises, whether attachment, aversion, acceptance, rejection, or disturbing emotions, train in recognizing it as an illusion, devoid of truth. All external phenomena are illusions, and internal cognitions are also like illusions. Because they arise from conditions, they are not true and are deceptive. Since they are merely appearances, meditate on the example of illusions. When going to sleep, maintain the same practice, especially remaining in the state of illusion. Without clinging to truth, relax and release into freedom from elaboration. Then, whatever deluded dreams may arise, recognize them as illusions, thereby freeing yourself from attachment to reality, fear, and anxiety. Train and expand in illusion, transforming the pure realms. The way to traverse as if in illusion is the same as before. By this, the clinging to samsara is naturally liberated. Liberated in illusion, one does not abide in nirvana. The two benefits, like illusion, are spontaneously accomplished. Therefore, meditate on the meaning of illusion. From the Great Perfection, "Illusion, a Respite," the second chapter, "Like Illusion." Furthermore, here, the Victorious One (Buddha) spoke of it as being like a cataract. Listen well to the explanation of this. Just as a cataract appears from forms, from the nature of mind itself, through the power of habitual delusions, the cataract of samsara, the illusion of seeming non-existence, is established. However it appears, it is like a cataract, deceiving the ignorant children who cling to truth. When the cataract of the five senses is bound in a box, look at the delusion that arises from grasping at a meaningless self. All phenomena of existence, the container and its contents, happiness and suffering, high and low, appear as if they exist, like the shadow of a lamp flame, or the second image that appears from pressing the eyes, and like the darkness of night with its multitude of afflictions. If one does not investigate, it appears, but if one investigates, there is no basis for identification. If one investigates thoroughly, its nature transcends all extremes. Like space, unborn, in the original nature of reality, from this very day, be certain to realize it. Deluded appearances are without foundation, like a cataract, severing the root and completely cutting off all characteristics. When investigated, it is emptiness, yet it appears as if it exists. Realize the unborn nature, the primordial state. Just as in the middle of a distant desert plain, even small things appear large, from the small clinging to a non-existent self, these deluded appearances of samsara appear as vast. These things that appear as delusions, when investigated, are without substance. Like space,

Since there is the appearance of non-existence, in the illusory existence like a mirage, do not grasp at the meaningless self, abide thus! The nature is natural, originally pure. Do not grasp anything, do not think of anything! In the appearance of the essence without grasping, what is the use of the box of discriminating attachment? Therefore, abandon all intentional objects, and know that all appearances are empty of truth. Thus, having realized all phenomena as mirages, establish your mind on that meaning as it is. The preliminary practice is the same as before, pray to the mirage. The main practice is to meditate on all phenomena as mirages, form is empty of truth, like a mirage, sound is empty of sound, like a mirage. Smell, taste, and touch are also like mirages, mind and phenomena are also like mirages, in the nature where nothing is true, the mind is also relaxed and dwells without attachment. Every day when sleeping, hold the mind in your heart, and sleep in the nature where all phenomena are like mirages. Obtaining dreams, etc., as before, certainty arises. Experiences, signs, and appearances are also like dreams, and the realization that nothing is real arises naturally. The distraction of non-attachment, the confusion of affirmation and negation are destroyed. Eyes and clairvoyance, samadhi qualities are accomplished. The treasury of the Victorious Ones' Dharma guides all beings. Therefore, meditate on the meaning of the mirage. From the Great Perfection, Illusion's Repose, the third chapter, The Mirage. Furthermore, here the Victorious One said it is like a mirage, listen to the explanation of what was said. Just as at midday in the summer sun, the plains are like a mass of water in a mirage. Through the power of the mind's extreme familiarity with self-grasping, the illusion of transformation appears like a mirage. There is no essence to grasp in this, the nature is non-dual, emptiness, the peaceful Dharma. Unborn like space, selfless, know the unborn, inconceivable. How it appears, from the very moment of this appearance, although it appears to arise, it is unborn like a mirage. Although it appears to abide, it does not abide like a mirage. Although it appears to cease, it does not cease like a mirage. Know that appearances are without inherent existence. Happiness and unhappiness, pleasure and pain, good and bad, all are like mirages, empty and selfless. All phenomena of samsara and nirvana, internal and external, are like mirages, appearing without existence, without inherent nature.
