Thinking about appearance and practicing impermanence: In general, conditioned phenomena are impermanent. In particular, the life of a person is impermanent. Especially, the basis of the aggregation of body and mind is impermanent. For example, cities and monasteries that were once prosperous and flourishing are now dilapidated and desolate. One's own body is like a city, and the mind is like a person, wondering when it will become empty. Practice from the depths of your heart, with the three aspects of preliminary practice, main practice, and concluding practice complete. This is the sixteenth guiding instruction. Then, thinking about the causes of death and practicing impermanence: Just as a burning candle quickly burns out, it is impermanent. If suddenly struck by wind, it will be extinguished in an instant. From birth to death, if suddenly there arises a cause of untimely death such as illness, evil spirits, or violent harm, then there is no power to remain even for an instant. Thinking, "Such a situation may happen to me at any time," practice with the preliminary practice of generating bodhicitta, the main practice of contemplating only that, and the concluding practice of dedicating the merit. This is the seventeenth guiding instruction. Then, thinking about going alone and practicing impermanence: Abandoning the appearances of this world, entering the path of the next life, lying on the bed for the last time, using food and clothing for the last time, when speaking for the last time, one must abandon all relatives, possessions, friends, and so on, and go alone. This is very difficult to endure. Thinking, "Such a situation may happen to me at any time," practice with the three aspects of preliminary practice, main practice, and concluding practice complete. This is the eighteenth guiding instruction. Then, thinking about the people of the times and practicing impermanence: Like this, all the sentient beings such as people and animals who died a hundred years ago, now not one remains. Most of the sentient beings on earth now will also be gone in a hundred years. I am also unable to transcend this nature. The beings of the future are also the same. Just as the calendar of the times changes, becoming old. Thinking about how the family, neighbors, friends, relatives, servants, dogs, goats, livestock, enemies, adversaries, companions, and siblings of my birthplace are no longer there, practice with the three aspects of preliminary practice, main practice, and concluding practice. This is the nineteenth guiding instruction. Then, thinking about having no reliable place and practicing impermanence: Mountain slopes, in the ocean, the realm of space, and so on.

No matter where one is, there is no one who can escape death. One dies due to causes that are timely and untimely. Especially in the human realm, the threats of death are extremely numerous, so one should constantly think, "When will I die?" and practice with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion. Twenty Verses of Instruction. Then, contemplating the uncertainty of external appearances, one practices impermanence: Even if there is no sudden cause of death, the Lord of Death will come like the shadow of the setting sun. Poison, weapons, fire, water, enemies, diseases, demons, and even mistakes in food, clothing, and behavior can cause death, which is extremely common. One should think from the depths of one's heart, "When will I also die?" and practice with the complete three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion. Twenty-first Verse of Instruction. Then, contemplating with strong aspiration, one practices impermanence: If one is going elsewhere, one should think, "Will I die this time? Will I return to this place? There is no certainty." When walking on the road or resting at a resting place, one should also think, "Will I die here?" Wherever one is, one should think, "Will I die here this time?" Whatever one does, eating, walking, sleeping, etc., one should think that this is the last action of this life, and meditate single-mindedly on death. The preparation is to generate the mind of enlightenment, the main practice is to generate strong aspiration from the heart, and the conclusion is to dedicate the merit and transform actions into the path. Twenty-second Verse of Instruction. The third meaning is to contemplate samsara as suffering, which is divided into three: generating general renunciation, contemplating specific sufferings, and comparing it to the present situation. First: Thus, I feel great weariness towards these sentient beings wandering in the three realms of samsara. In the course of samsara, there is no sentient being who has not been each other's parents, relatives, friends, intermediaries, enemies, and adversaries. If one were to gather the head, hands, and feet of one's own corpse born alone and pile them up into a mountain, it would be higher than Mount Meru. The tears of weeping would be more than the ocean. The heads and limbs that have been cut off for the sake of desire are also countless. Even the wealth, possessions, retinue, and power that are abundant in this life, when one is born into a state of poverty and destitution after death, are like the happiness of a dream that disappears upon awakening. The attachment and happiness that one sees in oneself and others in this life cannot transcend this nature, therefore
