That is called a great person, because it is aimed at desiring Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings. Therefore, I abandon the distinctions of small and medium persons, and for the benefit of all sentient beings, I resolve to study the path of the great person, practicing it with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice. Guidance Step Fifty-Six. Then, contemplating the benefits: If one is wandering in samsara, and even seeks refuge in worldly gods, why not take refuge in the Three Jewels, which abide in the supreme state of deathless liberation? Even kings and others, who are difficult to trust and inflict harm, are sought for refuge and help. Merely by relying on whom, one sows the seeds of liberation, distances oneself from unwholesome actions, increases virtuous deeds, becomes the basis for all vows, becomes the source of all qualities, and in this life is also protected by the white-sided gods, wishes are fulfilled as desired, one constantly remembers past lives, is inseparable from the light of the Three Jewels, is happy in this life and the next, and ultimately attains Buddhahood, etc. Contemplating these immeasurable benefits, one practices with the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and subsequent practice. Guidance Step Fifty-Seven. Then, the method of taking refuge: After taking refuge and generating the mind of enlightenment, in the mandala of the sky in front, the Lama and Buddha are seated indistinguishably on a seat of lion, lotus, sun, and moon jewels, surrounded by a gathering of Bodhisattvas and a sea of oath-bound Dakinis, visualizing them filling the sky. I and all sentient beings join our palms from the surface of the earth, and from this time until the essence of enlightenment, we offer ourselves to you, rely on you, and have no other place of hope or refuge other than you. Thinking thus, and with a beautiful voice, chant: I take refuge in the Lama! I take refuge in the Buddha! I take refuge in the Dharma! I take refuge in the Sangha! After reciting as much as possible, I and all sentient beings dissolve into the Three Jewels. That also dissolves into the central Lama Buddha Jewel. That also dissolves into the state of Dharmakaya, free from elaboration and emptiness. Thus, in a state without any object of focus...

Meditate for as long as the mind can abide, then dedicate the merit. This is the foundation of all Dharmas, and it is crucial, so practice diligently. Guidance Step Fifty-Eight. The seventh meaning, the practice of the four immeasurables, has three aspects: generating joy in meditation by contemplating the benefits, the actual practice, and diligent training. First, if you do not practice the four immeasurables, you will not attain Buddhahood, but if you practice them, you will attain it, so you must practice them. Loving-kindness makes everything pleasing in all circumstances and ultimately achieves the Sambhogakaya; compassion is without harm and achieves the Dharmakaya; joy is without jealousy and achieves the Nirmanakaya; equanimity makes the mind workable and achieves the Svabhavikakaya. Furthermore, in the desire realm, one achieves the bodies of gods and humans and brings benefit and happiness, and in the form realm, one manifests the qualities of samadhi and pure birthplaces. Therefore, thinking of the benefits, I will practice, and cultivate it through the three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent practice. Guidance Step Fifty-Nine. Then, the actual practice has four parts. First, the practice of equanimity also has two aspects: the object of focus and the manner. What should be known by thoroughly examining the object of focus is that the mind that is now attached to one's own side, such as parents and relatives, and hates enemies and their side, is ignorant. In previous lives, this enemy was also a friend, and the friend was also an enemy, so it is uncertain. Even now, the enemy cannot always harm, and if one complies, they may become a friend and be helpful. Friends may also speak unpleasant words, fight, waste wealth, and if one is displeased with this, it will cause pain in one's own mind, so they exist like enemies in reality. In the future, friends will turn into enemies, and enemies will turn into friends, because there is no certainty. Therefore, abandoning attachment to one's own side and hatred towards the other side, examine the meaning of equality between friends and enemies, and viewing all sentient beings in this way is focusing on the object. The manner of the mind is to treat one sentient being in this way, then two or three, one village, one region, one continent, up to the edge of space, and cultivate great equanimity without closeness, hatred, or attachment, with preliminary, main practice,
